Some friends dragged me to it. I knew it would be horrible but ended up going anyway. It was much worse than I expected. Smoky. Country music. Buncha wanna be cowboys and cowgirls everywhere.

Gotcha.

My grandmother was taken to it back in the day and she hated it. I remember her saying that the place was huge and had very low ceilings. She said that she felt trapped in there and worried that the place could catch on fire at any moment and with all the people in there she was sure that she would die in the fire.

That’s a good point.. if any of the fires that Sherwood set, or any other fires were started, during business hours, i’d bet the death toll would be way higher than even the Station/Great White fiasco in Rhode Island, simply due to the sheer size of the place and the hundreds (thousands?) of people there every night.

Btw the Station fire is a rabbit hole even deeper than the Aaron Latham journals if y’all ever get laid up or sick for a while and need some crazy reading material.

I went to Gilleys sometime around 1982 with my mother and stepfather. Wasn’t too impressed.

Never had the chance to go, but Urban Cowboy was huge when I was in high school.
Still one of my favorite movies ....

My father frequented that place in the late 70's/early 80's and he said the movie was pretty accurate as far as the bar itself and the clientele.

How does gilleys compare to Billy Bobs in for worth? Went there for a work function a few months ago and it seemed like a cool place but expensive

In its heyday it was frequented by 30+ year old drug store cowboy losers and fat butted women chasing them. Pasadena women were rough. Fools Gold however was the place to be- much younger talent and George Strait/ Ace in the Hole played regularly.

I had forgotten about that. I think that made the cigarette smoke worse. Smoke usually didn't bother me too much but it was like fog in there. I think I was the only non-smoker in the whole place. My friends told me that I needed to learn to smoke in self defense. I opted for surrender instead.

Billy Bob's, like Gilley's, is a trap, BB's is a nicer place and over the years they've continued to keep pretty good talent on stage, there was a huge legal battle over all sorts of infighting bullshite over the last few years and I really haven't heard too much of that place for a couple of years, it used to be a summer pilgrimage for me to go see Uncle Ted there, I guess he supported the losing side

I lived in Houston and office in Pasadena in mid 80's. Always had to take those visiting from our offices in NE and FL to it.

Side note is that my next door neighbor was a U.S. Attorney and they nailed a Mexican MD in Pasadena who was injecting patients with a cancer cure. He had a contract with Gilleys to capture and purchase what went down the pipe from men's room urinals then concentrate it to use as his cancer cure. Nailed on wire fraud.

I lived in Woodlands N of Houston during that time and we went once. George Jones was performing. Wife, FIL and MIL and a BIL. Warm up guys played til 9:30 when George was to perform. He finally came out about 10:00. Sang one hot tune he had and the crowd went wild. May have been No Show Jones. Yelled out we're gonna be here all night, turned around and exited off the back of the stage and didn't return. LOL! But we partied on.

I went around '88 or so. I was playing Lacrosse on the LSU club team and we had a tournament in Houston. Me and another guy I hardly knew went down there on Friday night. We had a big time as far as I remember. I was 18 at the time, and don't remember having any trouble getting in. We ended up sleeping in the parking lot, waking up at dawn and driving back to Houston to play Lacrosse that morning.

On a side note, this dude had never heard Led Zeppelin II, and after I put it on, he insisted on listening to it the rest of the weekend... all the way back to BR. Over and over.

You are right about Mickey. I ran three auto stores (Chevy) in Houston at the time he was in business at Gilley's. He was friends with one of my truck managers and we sold him a couple of Tahoes. He didn't have a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out of. Broke as a she hain't and awful credit. We (the dealership) co-signed his loans on the Tahoes because he was a good guy. He was Jerry Lee Louis' cousin on the one side I believe and his other side was the original Televangelist from Louisiana who would cry and carry on on T.V and got busted with several women (prostitutes) and would get on TV and beg for forgiveness.

Y’all need to watch the two hour documentary on Amazon. Really well done on how big of an arse Sherwood was but he knew how to make money and made Micky a millionaire
