In related news, Bermuda has spent tens of thousands of dollars over the past couple of months because someone said they saw an Eastern Diamondback on the island. They even brought in a couple of snake tracking dogs and handlers from the US to try to find it, but had no luck.

When I was a kid 50 years ago we were on a family vacation in that area. I was running ahead of the group on the trail and without realizing what I was doing jumped over a giant eastern diamondback on the path so until it moved away there was a rattlesnake between me and the rest of my family.
Could have been that one's great, great, great...grandparent.

They are on Galveston beach dunes also. Seen them a few times. I live in Southwest Texas now and found one on my front porch. I live on a 1500 acre ranch now, ones around the house get killed. I can find one if I go looking but they live, no need to kill all of them. Rodent control. Same with coyotes, kill some but not all, they help with rabbits eating every damn piece of vegetation. Saw some hogs for the first time a few weeks ago they will be dead soon.

Good pics.
I had a close encounter with a big timber a couple of summers ago. It was hanging out in a hollow tree that had fallen in a swamp I was walking. Had been in the woods for about 6 hours - very hot day. Ready to take a break and lean against the base of the tree. For some reason, decided to take the long way around the tree to get to the high edge of the swamp. Would've been kidney height if I'd headed the way I planned.. Was a mile from the truck.
Bought full leg gaiters the next day, not that they would've helped in that scenario. I'm in the field working a fair amount. Up until that day, I always walked with my eyes on the ground looking for snakes. I've slowed my pace considerably and look for snakes ground up and have a new appreciation of hollow waist high logs.

You need a barn cat.
My in-laws never had a snake around the ranch house when they had cats.
Since they moved to town a few years ago, there have been several rattlesnakes found right by the house.
That’s bad juju when the little grandkids are running around out there.

I hate snakes and hate even more seeing em at the beach.
Surfers in New Smyrna have seen em and I see em every now n then swimming while fishing the intercostal.
