Pretty cool. I've run in to quite a few cottonmouths near the beach, but never a rattlesnake.

I uncovered a diamondback the other day while doing some yard work. There was a big pile of branches and such that my landlord left, I was moving it to another spot for pickup. Getting near the bottom of the pile, I was raking stuff clear of the spot because I'm not stupid. Pulled a decent size log out, and there he was, curled up underneath. Dropped the rake, ran and got the shovel from the garage, and he got the shovel treatment.

Yeah, you don’t want to frick around with a damn rattlesnake.

Blows my mind all of these people talking about how cool it is to see one.

Very good friend of mine was bitten, and died, almost 50 years ago walking through the dunes down at Port O’Connor, TX.

Graduated high school the year before, she had been head cheerleader, just a wonderful person.

This is the best I could do, but this was the newspaper from back then. Top of the page. . LINK

You should make a burner Youtube account, bro before you post your own content to the OT. In any case, cool videos, but that's a big "nope rope" for me.

Perhaps.

But guy has talent - better than most of the musicians these days - that’s for sure!

We were wade fishing the bay one morning going in right before daybreak when captain do do tapped me on the shoulder.

I ran up in some grass, dropped my shorts and let it rip.

When I stood up there was a coiled up rattle snake (about the size of that one in your pics) about three feet from me.

I have no idea why I didn't get bit unless it was the cool morning air.

I understand why you feel that way, as that must have been a very sad time for you, and her friends and family, but just know that that she was incredibly unlucky, unfortunately. Its extremely rare for someone to get killed by a rattlesnake, especially these days with all of our medicinal advances.

The ones I saw on Sunday were of no threat to me unless I would have done something stupid. Snakes aren't going to chase or go after you. They just don't. They were as calm and non threatening as can be.

The real threat is a hurricane having tornados that pick up the snakes and throw them at you further inland.

I've been chased by snakes on multiple occasions. The "something stupid" is thinking that a poisonous snake is no threat to you. "Bitch, you knew I was a snake." All the spicy ones get the shovel treatment.

Okay, whatever gets you through the day.

I’ve encountered, and dispatched, more rattlesnakes than you can imagine.

I was, perhaps clumsily, trying to make the point that rattlesnakes close to a beach ingress path can be extremely dangerous, no matter how cute they look to you.

Sure maybe the one you saw had just eaten and was lethargic. It might not be that way tomorrow, and it may be closer to the path, and more hidden.

I personally would remove (kill with extreme prejudice) any rattlesnake that I saw anywhere near a beach ingress path.

My kids and grandkids are going to be walking that path.

Hundreds of thousands of people visit Fort Pickens ever year, and yet, as far as I can find, there has never been anyone even bit by a rattlesnake there. Therefore, I don't believe that they are as "extremely dangerous" to people as you say at Fort Pickens, just based on the numbers, and the absence of a single dangerous incident.

Yes, you should always be cautious and watch your step, and make sure to keep tabs on yours kids when you are in their habitat, but the chances of getting bit by one at Fort Pickens are almost zero, unless you do something dumb.

I've been feet away from hundreds of snakes, and I've never had one come close to chasing me. In fact, a great way to get bit by a snake is to try and kill it.

They are very predictable. If you know their behavior, are cautious in their habitat, and know what not to do, the threat is extremely miniscule.

Good for you. I've had water moccasins come out of the water after me.

The threat decreases to zero when their head gets separated from their body via shovel.
