I watched the Deepwater Horizon film on TV last night (second time I have watched it) and it got me thinking back to when the event actually occurred and led to me reading a bunch of stuff about it.

This got me to wondering if anyone here has a personal story or were impacted by it in a significant way? I'm sure there are people here who work in the oil/drilling industry or work in one of the industries directly impacted by the oil spill. I would also be curious to know if anyone here knew anyone on the rig when the event happened, or even if anyone who posts here was there.

I know this can be a sensitive topic, so only share if you're comfortable doing so.

My wife knows the wife of one of the Swaco guys that died. She got a huge settlement and lives in U-Club and owns some shop in BR.

Also I graduated about 2 weeks after it happened. I majored in PETE. That was fun

I was on board NAS/JRB New Orleans the night the rig exploded and the non-stop helicopter traffic kept me awake. I didn't know until the next morning what had happened.

On a related note, I was doing an audit of a bar located in the Central Business District of New Orleans and found $100,000 worth of ACH deposits from the BP trustee in to the owner's bank account. I asked him how he came about these, and got an sob story about how his business was affected by the rig disaster.

I know quite a few people that weren’t on the rig at all, matter of fact they never got close to the rig and they are what we call “Spillionaires”.

I do. The guy for BP who headed up the clean up for the entire spill is one of my best friends dad. They lived in Trinidad when he was in high school and while we were in college his family moved from there to London.

BP didn’t do shite for the clean up. All they did was contract Obrien and they subbed the entire clean up out.

How you think so many people got rich???

Pretty much. But he was/is still paid spectacularly well. He basically set up the whole clean up and still works for BP. He is a cool MFer and when we were pledges he flew in from Trinidad for a game just to haze his son in the frat house lol.

Exactly. Seacor, which owns O'Brien, headed up the clean up.

That’s who sprayed the Corexit if that’s what you’re asking

I work with John Guide. Surprisingly he still works for BP. I obviously don't ask him about the Horizon though. You can see the toll it took in him.

I also know the person who was in charge of drilling one of the relief Wells. They reached the original well bore in front of the second rig and were told to stop drilling to allow the second rig to intercept first. BP wanted the second rig to intercept first for publicity because the directional company on the second rig was owned by the same company who owned the Horizon.
