The center median had the wire ropes down the center. Would that have been better?
Don’t think those are designed to stop your typical crossover jet plane accident.

One of the replies to the video is spot on:
“Why can’t they get videos of UFO’s like this?”
Someone else mentioned trying the grassy median. But all medians have crossovers where cars can turn around (cops mostly) and with no power the pilot has to act fast.

Could they dump fuel before they crashed? Don't know if that would have helped the pilots.

didn’t hit a single car

People saying amazing they avoided cars.
1. They didn’t avoid cars and crushed one
And
2. They didn’t have enough control to pinpoint their landing. You can see he tries to land on the interstate but he lands hard and quickly veers right and into the wall
It was a simple stroke of luck he didn’t wipe out a dozen cars.

Juan Browne does an excellent job of analyzing crashes.
He breaks down what happened in this 17 minute video.

I know they likely did the right thing but is an interstate really a wise choice? It looks like it was next to exit 105 and just a quick google maps search there’s quite a few canals, a golf course, etc close by. Obviously their ability to maneuver was extremely limited, it just seems like a busy interstate while a long flat spot seems almost imminent to run into a vehicle? Obviously better than say a neighborhood.

One of the replies mentioned he was trying to clear the barrier wall to land on a golf course to avoid hitting cars and realized late he would not make it so veered left. No idea if true or not.

Wow, goes to show when it’s your time it’s you time. Can’t believe 3 survived
I lost one of my best friends 2 years ago to a plane crash. He was a pilot and an instructor actually. Was flying a twin engine Cessna and an engine went out, crashed into a warehouse north of Atlanta.
He was an awesome friend and human being. Prayers up Sergio ??

Theres some dumbass drivers in that video for sure

He does great and clear analysis that doesn't depend on the audience being a pilot or aviation enthusiast.

Where did you read about the flight attendant?

Wanted to land on the road but had to veer right (and go off the road) to not collide with the cars.
I believe they could have put that thing on the ground and coasted it to a stop if they would have been lucky enough to come down with just a few hundred yards of open road. The traffic just made it a no-win situation.

I'm wondering why he didnt aim for the other lane? Give the cars a chance to see you coming, and maybe get lucky by clearing a landing path
Coming from behind the cars, seems much worse on a crowded highway

You're not wrong. Self preservation is a human instinct.

Probably didn't have the ability. You'd be surprised at the amount of corporate jets and airliners that can't dump fuel.

Damn they almost nailed it. RIP fellas

So 2 things here:
1. At some point they’re just trying to put it down wherever they can. The cars weren’t their problem; the wall was.
2. To whatever extent they did have control, I would think landing in the same direction as traffic is the safest bet. Yes, it’s harder for the cars to see you when you’re coming from behind. But there are also way fewer cars that will need to get out of the way, since you’re moving in the same direction.
If they land against the traffic, as soon as the first cars slam on their brakes it becomes a demolition derby.
