Grade inflation was the result from letting anyone in. Just give everyone an A or B. “Look how well they are doing”……but they know

That screams educational excellence and rigorous coursework doesn’t it?

Fact is these schools demand high standards for admission, then it’s easy as frick to stay in..not all schools are that way, apparently Dartmouth is..makes sense, gotta keep people eligible to buy the product they are selling.

How is that possible? My son had a 4.2 GPA in high school and a 26 on the ACT. Between TOPS and the $1500 per semester President's Scholarship, I pay less than $800 per semester to LSU. They even offered him a student job to cover the remaining amount.

I'm not sure. First issue is WM refuses to weigh GPA. They have 10 APs, yet they list them with a 4.0 like everyone else. My wife is a CPA. She got all of the information from a friend who is also an accountant whose kid is currently a cheerleader at LSU. Input it all into a spreadsheet and with everything it came out to owing 15k a year with room/board. When we went to the kickoff a few weeks ago the speaker was basically saying LSU can't give the money everyone else in state does, but you're paying for the network. Neither of my kids want to go to ULM, but they actually offered the most money by far. They offered 57K on top of TOPS. They would get $1,800 a semester on top of everything being paid for 100%. Tech offered $38K on top of TOPS.

Well no joke…took three economists and sociologist to figure out what any common sense person could tell you but it is an Ivy League school after all so that has to be considered. DEI in action again.

listened to a podcast where the Ivy schools confirmed they were bringing them back because excluding them led to racial discrimination... which was their reasoning for getting rid of them.

maybe just stop making decisions based on race...

Forgive me for not being aware, but what did they use to determine who got in? Did they take most of the Asians who applied?

For last several years was GPA, letters of rec and personal statements saying how disadvantaged you are

This just shows how much Ivy League schools artificially inflate their GPAs. As long as you get in and keep the tuition coming, they will retain you and give you a at least a 3.0. What they are probably seeing is how these subpar takes look once they graduate.

Test scores were a better predictor than high school grades — or student essays and teacher recommendations

True!

In public education today there is a huge grade inflation problem.

Students can pay people to write essays for them.

Teachers can make up anything to include in their recommendations for students they like personally.

If you don't think that they're going to have a two-tiered system for whites/Asians and minorities, I don't know what to tell you. If anything, this will make it more difficult for "colonizers" to get into the school.

I cant speak on your one thats wanting to do ER if ULM would be a good fit but I know they have a great nursing school. At what theyd be saving I would be strongly encouraging that route. I had no interest in ULM at first either but looking back im glad I did that instead of some of the more expensive options I was looking at, including LSU.

They were having trouble identifying the minorities that actually had a chance of doing OK at Dartmouth without all kinds of extra assistance. Their studies showed that the applicants they want are minorities who score in the 1400 SAT range. With test optional, minorities were not submitting their SATs at all, even if they had a 1400, because they assumed if they did not have at least a 1500 they were not competitive. By requiring the SAT again, they can hone in on those 1400 students.

My twins have identical GPAs, with identical 10 AP classes, and one got 2-3 times more money due to her ACT being 4 points higher. One has a 33, the other a 29.

No, both are girls. One's a cheerleader, one's a dancer.

When I started at USL, they had open admissions. Placement was completely based on test scores. My ACT got me into the honors program, even though my GPA was complete garbage. A couple of top 10% kids from my school went there as well. One had a weak ACT, the other similar to mine. The weak ACT one was gone after a year; The other was not.

Another example... When I get a transfer student from another Baton Rouge school, they usually have good grades (in order to qualify for magnet). After a month, they are ready to leave because they are running straight Ds-Fs. More often than not, grades are a reflection of the students abilities compared to their peer group, not to the overall population. A straight-A student at Glen Oaks and a straight-A student at Baton Rouge High are two very different animals.

It is not that difficult to figure out.

thats because no one i sbeating down the doors to get into ULM and Tech. Im not saying kids are doing that at LSU but the admission rates are way higher.

The 29 with TOPS, would still owe roughly 60K to LSU for a bachelor's.
is this bc of room & board? This seems like a lot with tops
