Customers hit with automatic 20% gratuities as restaurants combat tipping confusion

As restaurants in several FIFA World Cup host cities welcome an influx of international visitors this weekend, some operators are adding automatic gratuities to customers' checks, citing concerns that guests from countries without a strong tipping culture may unknowingly undercompensate workers.
Fox News Digital reported last month that the Missouri Restaurant Association advised Kansas City establishments to temporarily implement automatic gratuities of 20% during the soccer tournament.
Now, some restaurants in other World Cup cities like Atlanta and Philadelphia are among those doing the same, according to Food & Wine.

That is simply “price gouging”….no other way to look at it.

I love how they assume the server deserves 20%. Just another annoying part of tipping culture where people and places assume it is deserved and not earned.

No difference from the 10% VAT and 20% service charge in the Bahamas.

As long as they advertise the policy, then i understand the need.

I don’t mind tipping 20%. I usually fall in the 18-22% range unless it’s extraordinarily bad or good… What I do have a problem with is using 20% as a baseline and then handing you that handheld thing and it’s giving you options for additional tip percentages. frick that. If you’re base lining me at 20%, you ain’t getting shite else.
Also, this wouldn’t even be an issue if there wasn’t a whole sector of society that is cheap, falsely entitled, and/or incapable of judging a completed job.

I don’t have a problem with them charging whatever they choose to charge…that is capitalism. What I have a problem with, is them adding a gratuity to the bill and then them hoping you don’t notice causing you to add another tip on top of that.

I don’t mind tipping for table service.
I don’t believe in tipping people making a fricking coffee.

This is a whole other issue entirely.
If I’m disposing of the cup and a table doesn’t need cleaned, I might stick a dollar in the jar out of the kindness of my heart, but I’m not adding shite when they flip that card swipe machine around.

I have no issue with this

The perfect description of the idiocy of "tipping culture"

I don’t mind tipping a bit on coffee/counter service/takeout if there’s transparency where the tip is going and the workers who served me actually get it.
After I was laid off I took a host job at a restaurant and we were paid $4.50 an hour + tip share and then they made up the rest to meet the minimum wage of $11.
The percentage of tips received never exceeded the minimum wage calculation, so tipping on takeout was essentially subsidizing wages without the workers actually getting more money. It’s a racket.

Value-Added Tax (VAT) in Europe is a consumption tax added to the price of most goods and services. The EU requires a minimum standard rate of 15%, but actual standard rates range from 17% to 27% depending on the country
The norm in Europe is a max 10% on the gratuity because of the VAT.
US is ~8-10% sales tax and 15-20% tip. Total of 23 to 30%
Europe is ~20% VAT and ~10% tip. Total of ~30%.
End result cost is roughly the same except the worker gets more tip in the US.

That's just taking advantage of stupid and/or lazy.
Also capitalism.

No, you dolt, it's protecting the servers. Participating countries that don't tip:
Japan
South Korea
China
Norway
Sweden
Netherlands
Switzerland
Germany
Belgium
France
Spain
Portugal
Croatia
Czechia
Austria
Lighter tipping standards:
Argentina
Uruguay
Colombia
Morocco
Tunisia
Egypt
Turkey
Jordan
That leaves three countries (US, Canada and Mexico) whose visitors probably understand the tipping expectations in North America. While I review social customs before visiting a country, a lot of people don't.

Oh, so a different type of "changing consumer habits"?
