Well there’s your buddy’s problem.

The school can’t just let a bunch of elementary school kids decide how they’re going to depart campus. It’s pretty easy to imagine what can go wrong if elementary school teachers just dismissed everyone and let the kids just figure it out.

If the teacher was expecting the kid to be in the carpool line, is parents would have filled out a transportation form saying he was a car rider. They can’t just ignore that.

As for the CPS threat part, that sounds unlikely. If they were “considering calling CPS” why would they tell the parents? Maybe it went down that way but I doubt it. This is coming from the wife (who was probably embarrassed), to your buddy, then to you.

while the issue may ultimately be as simple as the parent not filling out a form, in the heat of the moment, teachers aren't sure and if they don't interpret things correctly they can break the law so they over-report. can't violate your duties as a MR if you report everything

If that was the case, it would have been reported, right? If it's mandatory that the teacher do it, wouldn't she be in violation for simply threatening and not doing it?

Maybe CPS was brought up, but I doubt it was as bold a threat as the parent probably explained to the OP. If it was brought up at all.

you sound like a dumbass too for jumping to conclusions. Schools in my city don't have to be notified ahead of time.

Elementary schools?

So a kindergartener can just decide, “f this bus, I’m walking” and no one is going to say anything?

Sounds like your kid got cold feet about banging his teacher and she snapped

Yet schools operated exactly like this without issue until maybe 20 years ago.

In the late 60’s we all walked to school six blocks away. We also rode our bikes to serve Mass at 4:30 AM and then went fishing or hunting. It was way before daylight. We were eight years old. Different times.

I rode my bike to school from 2nd- 5th grade, and it was like 2 miles. They had a big bike rack out front for all the kids that rode their bike to school. It was great.

WTF? What's wrong with "today's world"?

Think about this.. We have a lot more people in today's world and its safer than it was 20 years ago...

I hear you.

However, It’s also true that schools 20 years ago were less likely to get sued into the Stone Age when a 7 year on a bike got hit by a car. Or got picked up from school by someone’s ex husband who doesn’t have custodial rights.

Not really. Parents are just more wont to file a lawsuit if something happened to their kid(s) after school.

Are today’s parents more willing to sue?

We are not the ones that started the lawsuits that began this. It was the older (read: Boomers) that forced this issue.

I find it a bit disturbing that most in this thread think its ok to just let a bunch of 7 yr olds leave the school premise riding bicycles everywhere. shite, probably half of the fricks would have training wheels on.

When I lived near my elementary, you had to turn in a signed form saying your parents were fine with you riding your bike to school.

They figured this shite out decades ago. Why do people make this so hard?
