shite. I walked home in the 90s fairly often first-fourth grade alone and with friends.

Then in 6th grade too when it was faster than waiting for the bus.

I find it a bit disturbing that most in this thread think its ok to just let a bunch of 7 yr olds leave the school premise riding bicycles everywhere. shite, probably half of the fricks would have training wheels on.

In a good neighborhood why not? When I lived in Cypress our neighborhood had bike trails everywhere and kids of all ages rode bikes everywhere. I know crazy to think kids can still be kids without being over-scheduled and helicopter parented.

What in the world has our society come to? Coworker said his wife brought kid today to save anymore embarassment for the kid, but they're considering letting him continue to ride in the future and daring anyone to question it.

I would lose my shite with the teacher and principal if this happened to me and mine...yes, probably a bad move.

Not exactly the same thing as a kid walking alone in

Asshat moves like that from asshat parents are as bad as the policy. Do you think the teacher wants to be in the middle? Of course not. But asshat overbearing parents and asshat overbearing administrations put the teachers in the middle. Shame on them both.

Until something bad happens and the parents want to put the blame on the teachers for not protecting their child.

In fairness, this is kind of the root of the problem here.

Most of the odd or overkill policy you see in schools are a direct result of someone “losing their shite” because something wasn’t done the way they wanted it to be. So the schools have to play CYA and swing the pendulum way in the other direction.

If everyone would simply stop “losing their shite” then we could probably have more sensible policy and administrative actions from schools.

Our elem school only will dismiss kids as "walkers" if they live within 2 blocks of the school, and an adult meets them at the gate to accompany them.

The schools are too afraid of getting sued if something happens to an unaccompanied child on the way home.

The threat to call CPS is extreme, no doubt, and I'd be having a conversation with my school board member about that.

Even on our school buses, they will not let a kid in grades K-2 get off the bus unless there is an adult or older child to meet them at the bus stop. They will let kids in grades 3-5 off the bus to walk from the stop home, but bus stops are no more than a half block away from any house.

We can sit here and say snowflakes, etc, but these schools are scared to death of liability.

True story.

I'm on the board of a local rec league. We had a parent threaten to sue us because we charged a $10 late registration fee because she signed her kid up 3 days late.

She didn't... but she did contact the district attorney's office asking if what we were doing was "illegal". One of the ADAs (whom I know personally) actually had to call me and discuss the issue with me so they could close out the complaint.

It depends.

I have a 7 yo girl. We live 3/4 mile from her school. No way I’d let her walk or bike home. She’s too inattentive and it’s about a quarter mile along the main road with hills and cars that go a little fast approaching the school zone.

Now, there is a neighborhood right across from the school. If we lived there and she was walking with a group of other kids (who were a little older) I’d consider it.

You gotta know your kid and know your area. All situations aren’t the same.

This, kids are coddled to damn much today. I would get in trouble if I didn't walk or ride my bike to school.
Hell, when I started HS I walked 2.5 miles to/from till I got my my driver's license for 2 reasons: 1) hated, loathed riding a damned school bus full of undesirable people; 2)so I could smoke freely, tobacco and left handed cigs both (on walk home could have a beer or 2 also. Sure I was underage even back then, but how many 15 year olds could rock a full beard/mustache? So with age limit 18 I passed w/out getting carded).

The threat of the CPS call was a bit much, but I’ve seen parents call CPS on a teacher for not taking a piece of pencil graphite out of a kid’s hand even when he didn’t tell anyone he had it until he got home. Actually became a full blown lawsuit, claiming he has permanent nerve damage from it (it was dropped).

So I don’t blame them for trying to cover their asses, it just could’ve been handled better.

schools aren't in the business of evaluating hundreds of different situations making calls on which are acceptable and which are not. blanket policies dude.

Mine probably rode his bike in 2nd, I know he did 3rd and 4th, we have a crossing guard on the only street the kids cross.

All the kids in our neighborhood walk or ride bikes

This story sounds like bullshite

I'm pretty damn sure that a parent has to tell the school how the kid is getting home.

4 blocks is pretty far for a 7 year old and I see why that would raise eyebrows but they're obviously going over the top about it.

I would never let a 7 year old ride 4 blocks after school. That's easy pickings for a pedophile who knows how to press a child's buttons.

I live about 2 blocks from an elementary and high school and I'd say most of those kids ride or walk to school.
