Any child that is legally unable to stay home alone shouldn't be allowed to leave school alone neither without adult supervision.

So a 7 yr old rides a bike home... he shouldn't be home alone anyways? Now what, lazy mom didn't walk her fat arse down the street?

Bring his bike with you down the road, pick up your child and let him ride bike home with you.

But are you doubting that if Lil Johnny got abducted riding his bike home from school that the parents wouldn't file suit against the school, even if the parents were the ones that pushed for the bike ride?

There's legal ways around this- hold harmless agreements come to mind. Believe it or not this was common practice before the internet came along and created the scary world we live in.

How did schools function before the age of helicoptor parents?

They also don't want Lil Johnny to park his bike on campus then accidentally hang himself on a swing set rope when nobody even knows he's there.

Time to bring down the dangerous swings I guess.

The school has to have a chain of custody for the children in order to be accountable.

For the time he is on school property, I agree. Once he leaves school (with a parents permission) he is no longer their concern.

This is something I've been pondering. Mine is in pre-k now but the elementary school and middle school are both exactly one mile from my driveway and half of that mile is in the subdivision. The second half mile is all sidewalked all the way to both schools. There's one street crossing.

Depending on maturity of kid, what is the age range for letting them bike to and from? The road is quite busy, there's two schools on it after all.

OP talking about a 7yo but also only 4 blocks. How old if it is a mile?

Too bad it doesn't work that way.

Too many crazy parents and too many lawsuits. Now the schools have the be run by addressing the lowest common denominator, and not in a mathematical sense. They have to eliminate as many ways they can possibly get sued or harassed by crazy parents. Imagine if that 7 year old got hit by a car . . . you probably wouldn't just have the parents suing, but probably also the driver who hit the kid claiming the school's negligence in letting a 7 year old out where he could get on the road.

If you want to blame someone, blame society not the schools.

Years ago a private school gave me shite about this. They told me I’d have to sign a waiver and indemnity. Put my kid in another school.

no that's pretty legit. teachers are so hard-wired being mandatory reporters that they report EVERYTHING to CPS

I'm sure there's a Soviet propaganda poster somewhere they could just repurpose.

I walked to the same school. It was three blocks of walking, but I was on the school campus after three driveways

I'm not going to do research for lazy people. But for special people like you, I've made an exception. Schools have been using CHS/CPS unnecessarily more and more. I could link the many cases that schools have been hauled to court and lost

So take your criticism of the underpaid and overworked/overmanaged teacher and shove it up your arse next to your boyfriend's load.

Wtf are you talking about? I’m criticizing THIS teacher, not teachers generally, which include my mother, aunt, grandmother, fiancée, three grandfathers, AND myself for a short period.

If you wanna say calm down because it could be forced by policy, that’s fair. But calm your titty tots because that was ridiculous.

I'm glad my parents gave me freedom and let me ride my bike wherever, so long as they knew where I was going going.

Yeah if I have a 7 year old I'm not letting him bike to school. Too many idiots like to speed through residential areas, texting while driving, you name it.

You are criticizing THIS teacher without knowing the actual first hand facts. Everyone thinks their RANT has merit and folks like teachers who are in the middle get to hear every asshat's rant.

As for teachers, I have over 20 in my family including my wife, mother, mother-in-law, sister-in-law, aunts, uncles and cousins to
my grandmother who have been in education from preschool teacher all the way up to my godfather who was a college president. Teachers are underpaid and parents in 2019 who do a crappy job being parents then expect teachers to do their job. These same parents then fly off the handle when a professional with 30 kids or more in the room cannot teach the skills a parent is supposed to teach. Or worse, they fly off the handle when the teacher TRIES to discipline these kids.

In this case, from the way it is being told in the original post, I would bet the parent went in with guns blazing. I doubt the teacher WANTS the responsibility of deciding whether or not a kid should ride a bike to school but that teacher still has to follow school policy. EVERY teacher deserves at LEAST the initial benefit of the doubt.

I apologize if my vehemence offends you but as someone who know people in education you must understand that in 2019 they have stolen the authority and autonomy of classroom teacher while increasing their responsibility. And parents have gone off the rails in their lack of understanding that the teacher should be treated as an ally and not the enemy under most circumstances.

Yea. exactly. So like I said. Point out how that teacher may be between a rock and a hard place because of policies, etc. and quit ASSUMING I’m making some general gripe about teachers. Again like you said, everyone thinks their rant has merit. Well you missed the mark on my rant being about teachers generally.

You called the teacher a PUSSY in your post without knowing the facts. And I DID point out that the teacher could be between a rock and hard place in my post.
quote:

As we do not know what school you do not know if this a policy of the school or the system. It could be a mandate that school counsel recommended due to a previous issue. Perhaps others have been fired or suspended for not following this policy. I have worked for companies where I had to do some really dumb stuff I did not want to do but I had no control over it because I could get fired if I did not follow policy.

We use to ride our bikes to school even in the rain. I had one of those long yellow Kmart rain coats. Our bikes were similar to adults having cars back in the days.
