If they tell me to take my pants off and I refuse, I can be kicked off? Now obviously that's an absurd hyperbolic example, but petty shite could definitely happen here.
As dumb as it is, that is an interesting question. SO let me go down this thought hole with you. First off, the Captain has ABSOLUTE authority over his aircraft, so let's assume (as was likely) that all of this was handled by the Captain.
But let's go further, you keep your pants on... the Captain comes to your seat and hands you his escape hatchet and commands you to bury it in the head of the passenger next to you.
You refuse. Ok, so that was clearly an unlawful order, so you are in the right.
BUT, the Captain has absolute authority over his aircraft, so what would happen is he would lawfully have you removed, and then he would be summarily fired (and possibly charged) for such an unlawful command.

Action A and B are the exact same
Except they're not. In on instance you are not required to do something, in the other you are.
There is no statute requiring people to pay attention to the safety demonstration. There is a statute requiring passengers to obey crew-member instructions.

But the instructed action isn't required. In the absence of a regulation requiring it, the instruction carries no weight.
It's a slippery slope when you say you have to obey whatever they tell you to do, hence my absurd pants off scenario. It just seems like circular logic or like when a parent says "because I said so"

Anti-vaxxers are cut out of the same bolt as those two arse clowns.

I've ignored every brief ever.
Could have been me.

Man, you sure went full LNCHBOX in this thread.
Never go full LNCHBOX.

It may have been execssive to eject the passengers, but when you purchase a ticket, you also agree to comply to the terms and conditions of their services. So, I don’t really feel sorry for the couple.

I was lnch before lnch.
But I'm not really attached to this. It's just interesting to think about.

A few seconds of chaos or inaction would likely mean more injuries and fatalities in a serious incident.
Do you think the average person is going to do any of the shite that is asked of them in a plane crash?
In the unlikely event that we survive impact, Steve listening to his headphones during the instruction probably isn’t going to make much of a difference

The safety video offers no useful instructions for emergency exit passengers.

Good
There needs to be more accountability for people guilty of general rudeness/being fricking dickheads

How many times must one listen to the safety briefing before you comprehend it?
What level of attention is required to be paid?

Sounds like they played stupid games.

Could you imagine being forced to listen to how to behave during a shark attack before you could swim in the ocean? Every single time?
Why not a pop quiz on the proper way to fall to your death after a safety belt failure before riding a rollercoaster?
Just tell us not to panic that the oxygen bag might not inflate while we read our Cosmo and get on with the show.

If you were asking me about the average person in front of me or behind me in line at the grocery store, you'd have a better point.
However, there is a small "uptick" in intellect (again, I said small) for airline passengers. And a larger uptick in intellect (likely, at least) for those who skillfully navigate their way to an exit row.
So yes, I think the average person in an exit row would do a decent job, IF they paid attention to, AND remembered the instructions given. I'd break it down as such:
20% would do an exemplary job
45% would do a decent to good job
35% would suck and/or contribute to fiery deaths of passengers
Also, it is worth noting that in SOME incidents, the crew would have time to RE-BRIEF the exit row folks of what was impending, and at that point, I'd put have far more confidence in their actions.

You think people are smarter because they can afford a Southwest “wanna get away?” fare? Yikes
