When I do have the window seat on an exit row, after the safety briefing, I typically tell the aisle person "if something happens, you hold 'em back and I'll get this door off".

Honest question... have any of you visualized the scenario?

You can FEEL the jet fuel burning the plane, you can see it and you are terrified.

The few seconds of inaction vs. quick action by the window-seat person, with SOME assistance over a precious few seconds by the aisle person to give the window person some room to get it done...

the difference is possibly everyone or almost everyone escaping unharmed... or a panicked, apeshit, desperate group of dozens of people pressed against the exit to the detriment of getting the goddamned thing open.

I think about shite like that all the time.

It's a hero complex and we all have it and we always save the day.

Something like that will never happen to anybody reading this, though. Statistically speaking.

25 minute delay isn't that bad considering they had to remove passengers. Well done, Air New Zealand.

You needed someone to look up that actual statistic that the overwhelming majority of adults have been on a plane, thus negating your above average intelligence claims?

Most people would have just gone with their common sense

See that? That's the plane on which I won't listen to the pre-flight instructions. I was gonna but for your disrespectful stuff (I wasn't gonna).

So yes, I think the average person in an exit row would do a decent job, IF they paid attention to, AND remembered the instructions given. I'd break it down as such:
20% would do an exemplary job
45% would do a decent to good job
35% would suck and/or contribute to fiery deaths of passengers

Also, it is worth noting that in SOME incidents, the crew would have time to RE-BRIEF the exit row folks of what was impending, and at that point, I'd put have far more confidence in their actions.

Most of this is your opinion that you are stating as fact. In a life threatening situation where a person has 0 control, they tend not to perform well at all

Since you like numbers, 10% is the widely accepted number of people who are able to keep their wits about them in life threatening situations

FINALLY, a salient point from you!! Ok, I'll respond...

Assuming your 10% is correct (and I work in the fire/police/safety business, and used to work in aerospace btw, I mostly dispute your figure), but lets go with it...

Would you prefer to possibly UP the odds from 10% to some higher number by having the people pay attention to their DUTY/RESPONSIBILITY or lower the odds by ignoring the instructions?

That same guy could buy a spirit ticket. Or even basic economy on american or Delta.
Could he though? I dont that guy has a checking account or knows how to book a flight online. And I dont see him making his way to an airport and doing it all with cash at the counter

That's a bit excessive.

Not at all. The exit row seats come with a bit of responsibility, the last thing I want is some asshat getting in the way in an emergency situation all because they felt they were too fricking special to at least fake watching a 2-minute instructional video.

The story doesn't say anything about what else may have gone on but from the many flights I and my wife have been on over the years I am willing to bet the chick's putting her fingers in her ears wasn't the end of it. People like that usually like to show their arse.

I've sat in the exit row on JetBlue flights a lot, the flight attendant comes and asks everyone as a group specific questions pertaining to being able to handle opening the hatch, etc. and each person has to give verbal confirmation that they understand and can handle it. No idea what's so bizarre about NZ's exit row that they need a 2-minute video though.

Just to be clear, we're talking about a hypothetical guy he made up from every stereotype in the world just to prove his point.

And you can buy Visa gift cards to buy tickets.

It's 100% excessive unless they knew for sure the couple didn't know what to do. Then they could have attempted to move them to a different seat for lack of willingness to perform the duties.

As long as the little old lady who wanted to stick her short legs straight verbally confirms she can handle an operation nobody can say yes to with certainty, you feel safe and secure. But someone not listening to where the exits are, the variation in light illumination, and oxygen bag inflation cautions, is a danger to your life in the event your plane plummets to the ground from 30k feet.

This virtue signaling thread is hilarious.

The chick put her fingers in her ears to avoid hearing the attendant and refused to watch the video. I would rather not only not take my chances with someone like that but I would rather such assholery not even be on the flight at all.

Try reading the story first. These precious snowflakes you're knighting for were in the exit row, one going so far as to even put her fingers in her ears to avoid paying attention. Yes, I would rather the little old lady who paid attention sitting there rather than the juvenile egotist. One is going to at least try to do the right thing, the other would probably do nothing but create drama then rush to be the first one to the cameras to talk about how crazy everyone was acting.

Ironic statement is ironic.

speaking of hypotheticals, does the gay flight attendant still have your pants? How did that go, anyway? Topsies or Bottomsies?
