Couple FAFO’d by not reserving seats on a flight

So apparently it’s a “travel hack” to not reserve your seats. I guess that means you’re the first one to get your flight cancelled if they’re overbooked.

Maybe this is me being a baby back bitch, but flying is one area I'm not about to skimp on. I don't want to sit next to a stranger for 3+ hours. I don't want someone else to choose my seat. I don't want to have anxiety that I might get booted from the flight.
I guess I don't like traveling enough to not be comfortable for the entirety of my trip.

Yeah being last to check in is definitely FO
Also it must be noted this is a British/Euro airline.
Also, pic of the couple:

Ryanair is the frontier of Europe.

I don’t get how this happens.
The airlines know the number of seats on the plane.
They sold the tickets. Not “reserving” a specific seat shouldn’t matter

What a pair of entitled whiners. No one made you go cheap and not reserve a seat and it's not the airlines fault that you willingly forfeited an open seat.

What the airline company did seems legit to me.

read the article. very reasonable, yet annoying, explanation provided by airline.

Airlines oftentimes overbook, betting that some won't show up.

I reduce the X factor as much as possible when traveling, especially when traveling by air.
Customer service is non-existent, and many customers are trashy AF.
Why make it worse?

Read the article. The airline had to change planes to one with about 10 fewer seats. So not everyone could go

100%. And either way the couple wants to slice it, the fact was that they purchased a ticket for a seat that was available on the plane. Yes, it's true that there weren't two seats but it's not the airlines fault that one of them got bumped and then they willingly decided they didn't want to travel separately. They 100% should have to pay for the seat that was open that they elected not to fill.

It absolutely is the airline's fault. They sold them tickets which should be attached to seats. Things happen. The airline had to switch to a smaller plane. There is a reason why the airline flew them on another flight and refunded their tickets.

So if they booked their seats, they and others that booked seats, could have not been allowed on the flight.
What a shite article headline

Sounds like that is all this was. One person on one plane the other on another

I have no issue with their getting bumped, but if the two tickets were purchased at the same time as part of the same itinerary, I disagree with you and the airline about charging them. Whether I reserve seats or not, if I buy a two ticket itinerary, I expect to travel with the other person. If you only have one seat, shite happens, bump us both to the next flight. But to require us to travel separately is unreasonable, in my opinion.
Now, if they purchased the tickets separately, that’s another issue entirely.

This flight from Birmingham to Palma de Mallorca (1 May) was not ‘overbooked’ – it was scheduled to operate on a 737-8200 (197 seats) but for operational reasons had to be swapped to a 737-800 aircraft (189 seats),
Ryanair is great. I've taken my family all over Europe with their cheap flights. This isnt some hack. You pay extra to pick a seat. Otherwise, find one open when the unassigned board last. If I remember, we had to reserve seats.when kids were little. Flights are short haul rarely more than 2 hrs. I've flown round trip for less than 50 euro on penny or 1€ fares plus tax/fees.
