A man and his wife have got themselves into big trouble. The couple is now facing theft charges and over $100,000 in overdraft fees after allegedly spending money that was accidentally deposited into their bank account, WITN reported.

Trouble started on May 31 when a bank teller mistakenly deposited $120,000 into Robert and Tiffany Williams account at BB&T, according to the report.

Instead of contacting the bank to know the reason for the deposit into their account, Robert and Tiffany Williams allegedly spent most of the money in just a little over two weeks from June 3 to June 19.

Authorities said the couple bought an SUV, two four-wheelers, a camper and a car trailer with the money.

They also said the money was used on bills, car repairs and cash purchases. Along with that, the couple allegedly gave $15,000 to friends in need of money, according to the report.

Honestly they shouldn't face any punishment. If it's in their account it should be considered their property regardless of anything else.

Finding money in a bank account is not the same as finding it in a brown paper bag in the bushes.

They're stupid for thinking they'd get away with it... but not as stupid as the financial institution for depositing $100k to the wrong account.

Should have withdrawn it and deposited it into an overseas account

No. The account is the bank's property. The money they put into is theirs, but the account itself is owned and maintained by the bank

If you see a random $120k pop up in your account and your first thought is to blow through every dime of it without asking questions you were probably already going to find yourself in prison for something else

So if I’m at a hotel and the valet brings you my vehicle by mistake, it becomes yours?

Happens all the time. Maybe not for 100k and it is usually found very quickly

What would happen if you took the money, put it in a high yield mutual fund, then returned the money when the bank came looking for it and kept the interest?

Isn’t that essentially what banks do anyway

This is either a poorly thought-out take or you do not realize how financial institutions work.

Actually, it could be both.

My client had a shite ton of money embezzled from him several years ago, and a chunk of the money ended up in some patsy's bank account in Slidell (of course). The idiot and his wife bought boats and shite, and I'm pretty sure the FBI/US Atty believed them that it just showed up there. There was some pokey time for the husband, but I think just probation for the wife. Most of that money was recovered, and of course the feds proceeded to frick my client and THEY kept the money.

What's good for thee, not for me. The motto of the gubment.

I am no financial guru but hell even shorting a stock to make a few thousand; basically any way to flip the money and be able to pay it back while keeping the profit
