What determines the max vs the average?
Household income.

Bear in mind these are “supplemental” benefits. They are expected to spend other money as well
That supplement money is needed for weed, nails, iPhones, and rims. Literally starving people after they were enslaved.

I am 100% certain that no one here would be able to feed a family on the estimated average benefit. For a family of four, it's a bit less than $6/day per person. That's $2/meal. Good luck with that.
If this was true Albertsons wouldn’t sell lobsters

Family of 4, two teenagers, we budget 900/month gif groceries. We eat pretty well.
If we ate more store brand and not as much steak, we could do it for 700/month.

Speaking of SNAP how in the hell can they justify allowing these ppl buy hot food / crawfish. They should be limited to water, noodles, rice, soup, deli meat / ground meat and that is it.

In the 1980s one of my crazy aunts got my grandmother to get food stamps. My grandma said it was too much money bc she made everything from scratch and didn’t eat junk food. So she didn’t renew when it was time because she had so much money leftover.
I think the food stamp program should be like the WIC program - where there are only certain foods you can get. No cokes no chips no cookies

Could I check my food stamp balance on my $1400 phone?

I wonder how much cheaper groceries would be if the government wasn’t propping up the prices this way.

Only if you do it while talking extremely loud on speakerphone

$1,000 a month with likely free meals at school and during summertime as well
Yeahhh they should be fine

Fruits, veggies and whole grains are relatively cheap even under current inflation. Meats, seafood and specialty items are more expensive. Most of the crap in the middle aisles is worthless from a health standpoint.
You could definitely meet the nutritional and caloric requirements on that budget if you prepare all of your meals at home and shop selectively, especially if you use coupons, focus on sales or buy in bulk where appropriate.
The problem is that's not the way people like to eat - especially poor people. They want fast food, junk food or really tasty food and their stomach is always growling for it.

At a convenience store near my work they sell pizza. If you have food stamps, you buy the raw pizza and then they cook it for “free”

They aren’t buying hot food, right?
I’d report them anyway

Just me and my husband at this point and I do believe that I could do it on $372 per month. I don't like paying more than I have to for anything and plan meals around what is on sale. Then I buy not in "bulk" but I do buy more than I need and freeze for later use. Sales cycles around so I buy enough say ground beef until the next cycle.

Also remember that SNAP purchases are not taxed, at all. So your entire allocation of funds is for food.
This is craziness. That ~$700 for a family of four is actually pretty good.
