I won’t be there. He’s running with my sister in law, but I’d assume he’d want to run faster than her.

It’s in two weeks, but ideally he’d be able to pace himself off of a winning time, then just dial it back if he’s not feeling it. IDK or pace himself for an hour, and if he’s got more in the tank start picking it up to try for 50 minutes.

I’m not a runner and I have no idea what to tell him. Sub 50 minutes looks like what it would take to win.

Race starts at 5:30am...that’s nuts.

Some of them go through the parks so they have to get it done before they open. They always have some pretty creative signs encouraging you to run faster as well. They are enjoyable runs if you like doing runs.

Why don't you map out a 10K run at home and have him run it to see what's reasonable?

Can he? Yes. Should he? Probably not. Anything over 3 miles without training you're going to risk messing up knees, shins, feet, stuff like that. I still mess my body up running sometimes and I'm a pretty avid runner

Guess he could download an app that would tell him how far he’s gone, Do you want to average the same pace, or do you want to get faster/slower as the race matures? I have no idea how to pace a 7.5 minute mile, I just don’t know how fast you’d have to run for that. I guess there’s probably an app for that.

I have a friend who ran cross country at Miami, maybe she’ll take him out for a run.

I was a HS basketball player. Pretty much played basketball all the time and was in great shape. First semester of college did a 3 mile fitness test. Nearly died doing it and promptly rolled into a ditch as soon as I crossed the finish line. Being in shape and being in distance running shape are two different things.

My disgusting sister can do marathons so yeah an athletic kid can do a 10K. It’s just a matter of “keep going”. 6.2 miles isn’t very far at all.

As far as pacing, idk, I'm not a runner. But, I'd imagine you want to keep a fairly constant pace throughout.

I'm sure you could use an app to map out a run and determine pace, but if he wants to track pace during the run a GPS watch is probably his best bet. I'm sure there are relatively cheap ones that will show his pace.

It’s funny looking through winning times, the 10-13 bracket has almost identical times to the 60-64 age bracket.

yes, unless he's a fatty or has bad genetics.

Any human from the age of 8-45 should be able to roll out of bed on any given day and jog 6 miles (even if you have to do some intermittent walking). This is assuming you don't have medically diagnosed physical ailments.

If you can't do this, you shouldn't be allowed to breed unless you can prove that you have an IQ of 130+.

With absolutely no history of distance running? Possible but it is a really bad idea.

Athletic kids tend to do better in sprints and other short races. Distance running requires endurance and pacing, which tends to come from a lot of practice and training.

Sure. I did this exact thing when I was in 4th grade. I think our PE teacher was letting it count towards some award you could win at the end of the year or something.

A 12 year old with no training isn't running a 10k in sub 50. That's 6.2 back to back 8 minute miles with no stopping. Even if he's physically strong enough, he won't know how to pace that nor will he be mentally strong enough to do it.

I just said pace off a winning time, IDK how this works. 48+ won the last one, top 25 did it under an hour.

I think it’ll be a day-of decision how he wants to approach it.

So, you went from wondering if he could do it, to wondering if he could win?
