My experience has been that it is an excellent place to find your everyday groceries, particularly fruits and veggies, and you'll save a good bit of money. However, for the more random and specialty items you'll have to go somewhere like Kroger/Albertson's. Quality is also solid, albeit not always name brand.
They are akin to a low cost airline, they have squeezed every cent out of the process and focus on core products. You won't find anyone walking around with a giant Question mark sign like Trader Joe's who's job is to answer questions... typically just a couple of employees checking out and maybe one person stocking. Another example: they don't employ someone to go grab the carts, so you have to put a quarter into the cart that you only get back if you bring it back to the store.

Their produce is way fresher and cheaper than local grocery chains here in NC. Most of the time it’s actually more locally produced than what those chains carry. We don’t really buy meat there.

Aldi is garbage. Produce is terrible, meat is terrible, everything else is generic brand and bland. None of the canned goods have opening tabs. No grocery bags. Only good reason to go is if you're curious what a grocery store behind the Iron Curtain in 1975 was like

You left out a shipping cart cost you .25, so you have to make sure you have quarters on you. I don't see the appeal to Aldi.

No, it's all off brand made to look like the name brands they copy. I drank a 6 pack of their "red bulls" and went to sleep.

There are brand name items at Aldi, but not necessarily all the time. I usually see Kerrygold and Cabot cheese, Coca-Cola, Sam Adams and some other local brands, but for the most part it is their in-house label stuff. They usually have an aisle with random food and drink items and home goods. The ones up here in VA always seem to have average to above average produce, and they have a good price on whole organic chicken. Other meats are average to below average.
While it's not for everyone, it will be popular for some. The cart and bag policies aren't really a problem. Bring your own bags or prepare to pay 10-25 cents per bag you need. You get your quarter back with the carts, so it's not like you lose 25¢ to use them.
Maybe think of it on the scale between TJ's and Dollar General, and less so between TJ's and Whole Foods.

Yep. We have Whole Foods, Publix and Aldi all within close proximity. All 3 serve different useful purposes.

I've been to an ALDI in Australia. I wasn't very impressed with it. It was interesting though that you had to put a $2 deposit in to use a buggy. You'd get the $2 back if you brought the buggy back to the corral at the front of the store.

They had some nice ALDI's where I used to live, and then some hood ones. All depends on the neighborhood
