Not what I was saying. I was saying that, even if he doesn't care about his own life, he needs to be careful and practice social distancing to protect the lives of others.

They’re pretty good at keeping to themselves and have been that way for a while even before this. I’ve encouraged curb side grocery shopping — I’m 90 minutes away but would go if I needed to; have a sibling 5 minutes from them if they need ASAP.

For the record neither he nor my mom have dnr as far as I know — she has a living will which addresses lots but when i asked if it specifies DNR status she said she wasn’t sure.

I made it super clear that they BOTH need to update all paperwork and address these things. I work in a nursing home and know the importance of having these. They’re smart educated people so I’m not sure why they don’t listen to me with this.

What did Dan Patrick say?

Tx Lt Gov, not sportscaster, said basically old people need to suck it up and take their lumps.

Dallas Morning News

Not exactly but go ahead and believe that. It was much more personal and mostly about himself and his grandkids as he is fairly close to be 70 (might be now as this was from over a week ago).

quote:

No one reached out to me and said, 'As a senior citizen, are you willing to take a chance on your survival in exchange for keeping the America that all America loves for your children and grandchildren?' And if that is the exchange, I'm all in..."
"I don't pretend to be speaking for everyone 70 plus... But I think there are lots of grandparents who would agree with me that I want my grandchildren to live in the America I did..." ...I want them to have a shot at the American dream. But right now this virus which all the experts say that 98% of all people will survive... is killing are country in another way... [it] could bring about a total economic collapse and potentially a collapsed of our society... So I say let's give this a few more days or weeks...but after that let's go back to work and go back to living. Those who want to shelter in place can still do so. But we can't live with this uncertainty."

I think it is the mentality most people will come over to in a week or so.

Especially if we find out this shite is like the flu and very little immunity is possible.

Kind of a bum comment. Honestly it would come down to money if it was really that bad. This is why I'm glad we don't have socialized medicine for all.

Ethics committees about to get a work out. We just had our meeting about what we’re gonna do when we run out of vents

Wouldn’t it make sense to give vents to those that have no underlying conditions first( likely few and far between), then those with conditions they can’t control, and then third those with conditions brought on by an unhealthy lifestyle

Yeh it sucks balls, but I sure hope that’s how y’all would do it

So you’re expecting to run out?

In your scenario, it may be reasonable if there is 1 vent left and 2 people arrive needing 1. What do you do when there are none left and someone arrives needing one?

75-year-old with no underlying conditions or 40-year-old with thyroid disease?

That isn’t black-and-white.

Politically correct answer or my answer for what would be good practical medicine in that situation ?

Correct practical answer is if the person coming in has an actual chance of making it through with a ventilator, you pull the plug on the patient currently on a vent that is the biggest lost cause

Yes it would suck balls, yes it isn’t ideal, but it isn’t a hard answer from a practical approach

Whichever one the attending thinks has the best chance to make it

There will be sometimes where the call is 50/50. But more often it would be somewhat obvious

But for clear reasons we as Americans never expected our healthcare providers to have to make these almsost wartime like decisions.
