I'm completely onboard that we have saved lives at an incredibly great cost.

I agree. "Trillions" is incomprehensible.

And I agree with pride that we don't know how this shakes out long-term.

I just don't know if there were a ton of other realistic options.

And no, I don't consider the government wishing everybody luck while making recommendations to be realistic. We kinda tried that early on and we saw how well it worked.

like what?
Higher percentage of Americans living off the govt, causing an eventual society in which enough people become dependent on social welfare to where the social welfare state takes over. Something along those lines

just don't think it's realistic for our leadership to sit idly by while MILLIONS of people died.
I also see this argument a lot, and I think it’s somewhat of a zero sum fallacy

We could have avoided shutting down businesses and the like without the other option being doing nothing at all

I have never really seen or heard of the govt basically forcing people to stop business across the board. That feels new

Let us know how it feels. Most of us are still working 5 days a week

The problem is that you're controlling the lives of others, too. Are you willing to give up all access to medical care if you do whatever you want and get it? Not likely, and that wouldn't happen even if you were.

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan will ban entry to foreigners from 73 countries and ask everyone arriving from abroad to quarantine themselves for two weeks as it struggles to contain the coronavirus, with a senior minister warning the country had been pushed “to the brink”.

Medical experts advising Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told a news conference on Wednesday that the rapid spread of contagion was severely straining hospitals in Tokyo, in Osaka and in some other prefectures, and that quick action was vital.

“Fundamental responses should be made as early as today or tomorrow,” Shigeru Omi, head of the Japan Community Healthcare Organisation, said. He said the medical system could collapse even before an “overshoot” - or an explosive rise in cases.

Abe is facing growing public calls to declare a state of emergency that would give local governors greater clout to tell residents to stay home, close schools and take other steps. But the relevant enabling law includes no penalties in most cases.

Many other countries hit by the pandemic have imposed legally binding lockdowns with serious penalties for violators. Japan’s new measures on travel and quarantine will take effect on April 3.

Japan had confirmed 2,362 domestically transmitted cases of the coronavirus and 67 deaths as of Wednesday, public broadcaster NHK said - relatively small tallies compared with those of the United States, China and Europe

Do we want to go down that road?

Being unhealthy and not caring for yourself drives up the money everyone else pays for medical care and health insurance. Yet it isn’t illegal or really even frowned upon to be a complete slob

That’s part of living in society. Unfortunately with free will, others decisions can have a negative impact on your life. That shouldn’t make everyone come to a screeching halt in my opinion.

And right now, the govt is controlling millions of Americans lives by putting them out of a job......

Ahh, I see now. Seems easy to be a fan of the shutdown when your personal situation isn’t hurt

It's about as easy as getting mad at protective measures against this virus when you aren't a high risk.

Funny how that argument only works one way for you

My congenital heart issues are pretty well documented on this site

You have to pretend you are an emotionless blob of goo when trying to make a decision of this magnitude

ETA: I was pretty onboard with the closures at first. But they keep pushing things back. People are talking about June and July now.....Things get to that point would you still be onboard? Would you still have a job? Would the majority still have jobs?

Is he as much of a mouthbreathing, fetal-alcohol-syndrome retard in real life as he is in real life?

Sure

But they aren’t inflatable. One of the lead epidemiologist experts being leaned on here predicted 100k swine flu deaths in the U.K. and asked for Britain to shutdown in 2008

Whoops

Also from working for a health system, doctors are fantastic at practicing medicine. They are horrific at running a business. It seems to this point we are only looking at the medicine side

I'd love to.

Paying an extra few dollars in taxes isn't remotely comparable to denying someone healthcare because you want to be an idiot.

The government was controlling your life long before coronavirus, and they'll continue to do so long after.

So we should be ok for them taking more and more? Is that your argument?

My argument is that if you weren't crying about it before coronavirus and you won't cry about it after, you have no point by crying about it now.

I have been pretty much “crying” about the govt taking more and more since I got my first paycheck

So we good now?

I firmly believe taxes should not be allowed to be taken out of a paycheck. Everyone gets a bill at the end of the year. Let the people decide then how they feel

Why can’t it be a voluntary quarantine

I would agree if those who voluntarily go to mass parties on spring break or mass church congregations or other large gatherings went straight back home without interacting with others. Unfortunately, that is obviously not the case.

I don't believe you.

Even if I did, it wouldn't make your argument any better.
