It's funny that my post got a downvote and your post, which is simply a quote of my post, got 3 upvotes.

I posted the first case in Pointe Coupee a couples days ago. The fellow that has it is a State Trooper that was down in New Orleans serving at Mardi Gras. That is were he picked it up.

They said if we did NOTHING, the death toll would be over 4 million. If we did SOMETHING, the death toll would be like 2 million. But if we did EVERYTHING, our death toll would be a few hundred thousand.

Who is "they"?

I'd love to read this. That's crazy.

I do remember seeing people post that here, but no one ever provided any link to the source.

So I obviously ignored it.

"They" are the Imperial College of London, who are supposedly the experts in this type of thing. Note that these are the same guys that this week said that the UK wouldn't be 500,000, it would be closer to 20,000

quote:

The report, which warned that an uncontrolled spread of the disease could cause as many as 510,000 deaths in Britain, triggered a sudden shift in the government’s comparatively relaxed response to the virus.

American officials said the report, which projected up to 2.2 million deaths in the United States from such a spread, also influenced the White House to strengthen its measures to isolate members of the public.

I’m from Ohio and went to school there; my wife is from Hurley, MS and we have family in escatawpa/gautier/moss point.

As a consequence I’ve spent a bit of time on that particular stretch of the coast.

Neil Ferguson has now clarified his statement which was misinterpreted. Here is the clarification.

I should have brushed up on that old report. I thought their high end estimate for the US was 1.6 million.

It's odd to me that he can fail as consistently as he does and still be considered an expert.

I'd love to see the actual report. Very interesting stuff goes into these models. We're working on one at my office that changes every day to model the impact on our ERs. The "data scientists" are using so much information to put into this thing.

Pretty fun to participate in.

Dude is all over the place. Interestingly, someone pointed out that this was the same guy who projected that 65,000 people would die of the swine flu in the UK when it hit.

They had something like 500 deaths. Total.

ETA: His explanation is now "Well, my 500k projection COULD have been correct, but it's not going to be".

He was recommending to the UK government that they implement these mass shutdowns for swine flu...

quote:

Swine flu 2009

Swine flu UK 2009[23]
During the swine flu outbreak in 2009 in the UK, in an article titled "Closure of schools during an influenza pandemic" published in the Lancet Infectious Diseases, Ferguson and colleagues endorsed the closure of schools in order to interrupt the course of the infection, slow further spread and buy time to research and produce a vaccine.[24][25] Ferguson's team reported on the economic and workforce effect school closure would have, particularly with a large percentage of doctors and nurses being women, of whom half had children under the age of 16.

quote:

In his report to the House of Lords in 2009, Ferguson recommended that to halt transmission of swine flu, actions would need to include "treating isolated cases with antivirals, public health measures such as school closures, travel restrictions around the region, mass use of antiviral prophylaxis in the population and possible use of vaccines".
