Dude...take a look around the globe. Italy is practically shut down. China is practically shut down. Other countries are considering similar measures. Here in the United States, businesses on the West Coast are closed and are telling their employees to work from home and some districts in Washington and Idaho have temporarily shut down classes while they sanitize entire schools.
You think the reactions in Italy and China are overkill?
I don't disagree on what the public is doing, but I really don't see the government or big business contributing much to that.

The reactions in Italy and China are not overkill. They have legitimate pandemics on their hands.
Honestly, the Italian reaction hasn't been enough, and the EU probably should have shut down travel from Italy to other EU countries, particularly by rail and car.

London Heathrow Baggage Handlers Test Positive for Coronavirus
Coronavirus has reached Europe’s busiest airport, after two British Airways baggage handlers at London Heathrow tested positive for the disease.
The affected workers are recovering in isolation at home, British Airways parent IAG SA said Friday in an email. A small number of the luggage handlers’ colleagues are also being tested, a person familiar with the matter said.
The outbreak’s presence at such a heavily traversed junction is likely to escalate concerns about air travel after the virus’s spread from Asia caused consumers in Europe and the U.S. to pull back. The International Air Transport Association warned this week that carriers may lose $113 billion in sales this year, almost four times greater than its estimate of the epidemic’s impact from just two weeks earlier.

media and local/state governments are whipping them up into a frenzy over this nonsense.
Maybe it's a matter of perspective but, based on the data we've seen so far, this is not nonsense for a lot of Americans. For those of us who are old enough to fall into a higher risk group, and whose close friends and relatives fall into the high risk groups, it's natural to be concerned or even to "overreact" a bit. Caution and even fear aren't always irrational, they were selected for in the gene pool because those are survival traits.

I've linked Caixin a couple of times in this thread, since it's the closest thing we have to an independent journalism outlet in China.
This new article, if true, from Caixin should really concern everyone from an economic perspective. The notion that China is faking numbers related to business productivity isn't terribly controversial. However, the extent to which it's happening is eye-opening. Take, for instance, this quote:

This new article, if true, from Caixin should really concern everyone from an economic perspective. The notion that China is faking numbers related to business productivity isn't terribly controversial. However, the extent to which it's happening is eye-opening. Take, for instance, this quote:
quote:
As cases of COVID-19 in the country slowed in recent weeks, local governments in less-affected regions pushed offices and factories to get back to work, typically by assigning concrete targets to district officials. Company insiders and local civil servants told Caixin that being pressured to fulfill impossible quotas has forced them to cook the books.
Leaving lights and air conditioners on all day in empty offices, turning on equipment, faking staff rosters and even coaching factory workers to deceive inspectors are just some of the ways companies fabricate rosy statistics for local governments to report up the chain.
Electricity consumption data has regularly been used as a metric for the back-to-business rate when reporting to Beijing and the public.
Nevertheless, a district official in the provincial capital, Hangzhou, told Caixin that starting Saturday, factories were instructed to leave equipment idling for the entire day, while offices were told to keep computers and air conditioners running. This coincided with Beijing checking the resumption rate by examining energy figures.
And this:
quote:
In the small industrial city of Botou 230 km south of Beijing, Caixin found factories reported by the local government to have reopened had not actually done so.
The head of one told Caixin that despite the directives, the local government's unwillingness to risk an outbreak meant the company had not actually restarted. "The government still forbids factories to actually resume work," the executive said. "We have returned to the offices, but production has not restarted at all."
He also said the Botou government asked him to falsely report the number of employees who had returned to work and even coached workers about how to lie if they received calls from inspectors.
The original article is HERE, but behind a paywall.

To date, @UWVirology has performed approximately 400 tests for #COVID?19. We are seeing a consistent positivity rate of 5-7% among specimens submitted to the lab. We are able to meet all current testing demands with capacity for over 1,000 tests per day.

Do you worry they will die from the flu?
Because 40000 of those people have this year

Can y’all go start a flu thread? This point is beaten all over this thread, I would guess easily 300 pages worth of it.

Not saying any of that isn’t true, but I deal directly with 5 factories in China and all are back in production. I have a container shipping next week and another the week after. There have obviously been delays thanks to the virus and CNY Holiday, but unless the virus makes a comeback there, I think we will see production continue to get back to normal.

Yep, I don’t trust the Chinese numbers re the virus
But I do think it is clear at this point that China is returning to work

Agree
And we may get to that point. I feel like right now we're sort of holding out hope that the event won't be that pervasive/widespread hence putting people in isolation and whatnot.

Yes, that's why I take the flu vaccine and most of them do too.
