That $8.3 billion is up from his initial proposal of $2.5 billion. He and the Republicans went from thinking $2.5 was enough and scoffing at Dems for wanting more to tripling it in less than a week. Yet some people think this isn't serious?

You fight the fight you need to fight. The left over money can be used to build a wall to keep the virus out

DJT is wise to recognize the Corona hill was not the one to die on. $8 billion will not be spent fighting this.

I'm sorry but you don't get that kind of movement from either party if something isn't a big deal.

I think you don't know how this works. If Trump asks for 8, the Democrats ask for 16.

People die in my community every day from car crashes, gun violence, and chronic health problems. More people will die from those things in the United States tomorrow than they will from the amount of people Coronavirus has so far killed.

That's great and all, but it's irrelevant. What's more, we already try to limit car crashes, gun violence and other health problems.

Why wouldn't we do the same here? Honestly the ridiculous disregard for public health measures falls into the same boat as the people buying up toilet paper - they're both emotional, stubborn reactions to reality.

More people as a whole will die because of the Coronavirus. It isn't binary. Say Ebola was floating around a bunch more other viruses you would say well the flu kills such and such... No shot Sherlock but the more disease we have to fight the more deaths there will be from diseases. Just like the more people that drink and drive the more deaths from drunk driving.

I wish stupidity had a higher mortality rate. The human race would be better off.

It's also terrifying b/c these are the people walking around and potentially infecting others. Unless these people are somehow not contagious, they are most likely the ones spreading the virus b/c at least the sicks ones stay home.

Yes and no. It's terrifying because it's unknown. But asymptomatic people aren't coughing or sneezing all over everything. They aren't normally the biggest drivers of disease spread.

We arent doing the same. Thats the point. We are going beyond exponentially in some cases

People would riot at the thought of closing schools, stopping sporting events etc etc in order to get more cars off the road to prevent vehicle accidents.....

Yet, vehicle accidents kill 102 people per day in the USA. In 12 months, 33,000 people die in the usa alone from vehicle deaths. In 3 months, 3,300 people have died worldwide from COVID-19

Its just proof people are only truly "frightened" by this to the point they are because its new

Hell, people would lose their mind if we even suggested making the max speed limit 45mph

I have no problem with people taking precautions. Wash your hands and all that junk. My problem is with those who are trying to create mass hysteria. Take the state of California for instance. They just declared a state of emergency. And for what? 60 cases in a state with a population of 40 million. That's the kind of move that will cause a panic that can end up killing more people than the virus itself.

That's my issue and people on this message board and in this thread have a similar mentality. It's almost like they want this to be a true pandemic on the same size and scale as the 1918 Spanish Flu.

There will no doubt be overreactions.

Of course I'm going to guess the state of emergency declarations are for various governmental powers (tapping into reserves, etc.) rather than some sign of government panic.

Like when we declare a state of emergency BEFORE a minor tropical storm or snow arrives.

It is still an overreaction no matter how you slice it.

There is utility in vehicle use and danger is inherent to that use. Moreover vehicle crashes are the product of human autonomy/mistake, and the impacts of coronavirus are not. I don't see how the two are comparable.

There is, of course, a "cost to doing business" in all things and ultimately we may decide as a society that schooling or sports or whatever is worth the spread of a disease (we already do, really). But this is a new disease, the planned halts are temporary, and I just don't see them as a big overreaction if the goal is to try and slow the spread by restricting non-essential stuff for weeks or a couple months at a time.

Bro cars have been around for 100 years. Covid-19 has been around for 3.5 months. It hasn't had time for everyone to have a car or 3. When they do tho I think there will be a few more deaths. What's the chance of me dying driving a car? I drive one almost everyday. Let's compare diseases to death by cars that makes since. Let's compare building cars to people having sex. Dumb people reproduce more often... Why do only smart people build cars more often?

This is what I'm talking about with stubbornness. You haven't really pointed to anything that crazy, and nonetheless you're insisting it's an overreaction.

People buying the stores out of sanitizer and TP is an overreaction. Shutting down some schools in a hotbed of viral spread isn't a big overreaction and is done for other illnesses with regularity in this country.

Wait, what?

I said it was going to be a global pandemic back in January. I can pull it up if you like.

This “us vs them” BS has to stop, especially if the posts are going to have a sense of smugness of your “side” winning.

Especially as I ended up in the “them” catagory because I refused to believe every little twitter post including it being an “obvious” bio weapon and that China was hiding 100k dead from the virus.

There were some awesome gems back there I’m getting increasingly tempted to refer back to.

Dude...take a look around the globe. Italy is practically shut down. China is practically shut down. Other countries are considering similar measures. Here in the United States, businesses on the West Coast are closed and are telling their employees to work from home and some districts in Washington and Idaho have temporarily shut down classes while they sanitize entire schools.

Costco is limiting the amount of water and food you can buy because of run-ins that have happened in their stores throughout the country. Other buy-in-bulk stores like Sam's Club are doing the same. People are starting to panic because the media and local/state governments are whipping them up into a frenzy over this nonsense.
