I'm not saying we ignore it but people need to calm down a bit. The media loves to sensationalize this stuff.
If they think it will hurt Trump it is gonna be Super Bowl Half Time sensational.

Well, you know, as long as the stock market doesn’t tank because of it.
The stock market needs corrections from time to time. And this might be an opportunity to buy stocks at a lower entry point for some people. Most people I know (that buy stocks) have made a few buys this week.

Lol I knew you’ve been a doc for some time. Just wasn’t sure if your ER talk was my remembering ancient history or something ongoing.
Gee, you should be even more super stressed about this, being in the front lines and all:

He probably has a stash of N95 masks, bleach and 6 months of food. Scruffy is likely well prepared.

There is something VERY wrong with saying things like that CDC official did where everyone should start panicking.
You mean Rod Rosenstein’s sister and her virtue signaling?
And for those that don’t know, Rod Rosenstein is a key figure in the clusterfrick of impeach trump/deep state debacle. Hence, she has a motive to fear monger and try to make this worse than it is in order to make the president look bad.

Just curious, how do you see this playing out?
And are you not concerned about our ability to care for critical cases at a rate of 5%?

That is a loaded question. Anyone with a brain would be concerned about that.

I was absolutely where you are a few weeks ago. I didn't understand what was such a big deal about a few dozen deaths in a country of 1 billion+. (I realize that sounds heartless, these are people with lives and loved ones, I know.) The media attention seemed outsized to me. More people died daily from the flu, or car accidents, or child birth, or any number of common causes.
However now, Japan has closed all schools, the military has suspended drills in Korea, Italy is shutting down whole towns, and Saudi has suspended travel Mecca.
It has become a bigger story because it is a bigger story (as evidenced by the size of this thread).
Do I think we will have widespread infections in the USA? No. But who knows? We has anti-vaxxers bringing back measles, so Covid-19 might happen.

Yup. I put a little out of each paycheck into a 401k (I have a pension so the 401k is lagniappe). I'm going to still move money into it but am going to hold off on buying until the market settles down or a vaccine is announced.

Been brewing at all? I have about 50,000 calories worth of funky and sour beers on reserve if people start making a run on the stores.

Scruffy-what is your mask situation at your facility? We have some supply line disruptions here, specifically PPE. The county just suspended the requirement to wear masks for people who declined flu vaccine. Our facility was also impacted by the cardinal gown recall. I am not in panic, but I am a little concerned. The rumors are of course crazy at work. Someone went in our department and took all of our masks, gloves and saniwipes last night. Full disclosure-I am in Sac.

I do not expect deaths to be even remotely within the same range as flu either.
Had this started in a country with proper medical care, I suspect it would not be remotely like this.
South Korea will give us great data.

I think China's quarantining of millions of people via blocking off whole cities is what really set the initial fire. The rapid spread, reports about China under-reporting the numbers, the responses in Japan and South Korea, the surprise breakout in Italy and the CDC's ominous warnings have all been throwing jet fuel on it.
As more cases crop up (especially like the new one in Nebraska that has yet to be linked to travel to China), the worry increases.
I've made no bones about my concerns in multiple threads. If this gets loose in the homeless, opioid-addicted populations of LA, San Fran, Seattle, etc. then the mortality rate is going to skyrocket and the press is going to go into a feeding frenzy of hysteria.

The new coronavirus has an HIV-like mutation that means its ability to bind with human cells could be up to 1,000 times as strong as the Sars virus, according to new research by scientists in China and Europe.
Scientists showed that Sars (severe acute respiratory syndrome) entered the human body by binding with a receptor protein called ACE2 on a cell membrane.Other highly contagious viruses, including HIV and Ebola, target an enzyme called furin, which works as a protein activator in the human body. Many proteins are inactive or dormant when they are produced and have to be “cut” at specific points to activate their various functions.
When looking at the genome sequence of the new coronavirus, Professor Ruan Jishou and his team at Nankai University in Tianjin found a section of mutated genes that did not exist in Sars, but were similar to those found in HIV and Ebola.“This finding suggests that 2019-nCoV [the new coronavirus] may be significantly different from the Sars coronavirus in the infection pathway,”
The virus uses the outreaching spike protein to hook on to the host cell, but normally this protein is inactive. The cleavage site structure’s job is to trick the human furin protein, so it will cut and activate the spike protein and cause a “direct fusion” of the viral and cellular membranes.
Compared to the Sars’ way of entry, this binding method is “100 to 1,000 times” as efficient, according to the study.
In a follow-up study, a research team led by Professor Li Hua from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, Hubei province, confirmed Ruan’s findings.Meanwhile, a study by French scientist Etienne Decroly at Aix-Marseille University, which was published in the scientific journal Antiviral Research on February 10, also found a “furin-like cleavage site” that is absent in similar coronaviruses.

Just to be clear, you don't think 5% of cases will be critical? And you think there will be a lower mortality than the flu?
How up to date are you on the number in Singapore and South Korea?

They have created massive plague zones and have done nothing to improve the situation.

No! Not much running either. We moved and I still need to get my stuff pulled out of boxes. I couldn't get my sour barrel moved to the new place and had to dump it
However, I saved a bunch of dregs from the barrel and they smell great. We are going fishing this weekend so maybe I'll brew a 100% brett pandemic ale next weekend. Also, I found a few bottles of your stuff while packing and have them in the fridge.
