Well I may not be remembering right, but I seem to recall that the initial predictions were several hundred thousand dead with mitigation efforts. No reason for anyone to be snarky either way, as we are far from done. The predictions were what they were.

I don't know about the rest of the world, but excess mortality will definitely START to increase in this country soon. People seem to think that the elective procedure moratorium means nose jobs and face lifts. Many of these elective procedures that are being postponed or foregone are diagnostic procedures, like endoscopies, cardiac stress tests, various radiographic procedures, biopsies. Practices and clinics are cutting hours and laying off doctors around the country. It's harder for people to see a physician for new onset symptoms or simple things like a developing skin problem on LE. This is going to end up a health care crisis of diseases that we already know how to treat, and there will an excess of what were previously preventable deaths.

There were a few numbers thrown around, the ones throwing in excess of 1MM deaths came out of the UK and weren't used by any public figure in the US (but were certainly thrown around in the media).
The IMHE model most used in the US was in the 100's of thousand range initially, then swung low (60k) and is now creeping back up (67k) by August.
The initial IMHE model that landed on 100's of thousands got the Northeast fairly close to right, but drastically overstated R0 in Cali/TX/FL, and the rural areas, especially in the lockdown case.

Further supports the assumption that hospitals are deeming folks that would have died of heart disease or diabetes (there are supposed to be 2,000 of these everyday in the US) as Covid deaths if they test positive. Hell with presumptive positives you can just call it Covid and get that sweet, sweet government cheese.

The SO’s dad felt weird today and is like the poster child for underlying conditions. Either way, went to ER with non-Covid symptoms just for normal concerns. He was tested for COVID right out the bat. Results were back 2 hours later. Negative. They’re now running him through the ringer of tests, presumably to rack up a nice bill. Not a problem he’s still sick and on Medicaid so not really a worry for him.
Just wanted to give people a look at where we’re at in the state testing wise. This is in St. Tammany.
