Try to find a negative article about any cartel in a Mexican newspaper. They don’t exist. Only criticism comes in the form of anonymous blogs that their VPN’s are a matter of life or death.

The people there have a Stockholm syndrome like mentality to the cartel situation. The authorities are virtually powerless.
The people are poor and have limited options so the cartels don't seem so bad with their flashes of wealth. There are limited jobs and opportunities there outside of the drug trade.
The area around Iguala and Cocula are full of opium fields and are fought over by rival cartels.

Then the cartel is the authority.
It makes me wonder if some ethnicities are more amicable to being ruled while others are more apt to seek a freer life.
Consider if you put an equal number of each in similar situations, if some would gravitate towards a strongman Society while others would be More Democratic, in the classical sense.
Or some would gravitate towards the collective while others would be more individualistic.
And what is the root for that?
Is it in our genes? Is it environmental? Societal?

Yep a corrupt shithole and you can see it form the greatest country ever developed, that’s the sad part.
One of my buddies is a US Marshall and spent his first several years in a border town and the cartels would frequently leave beheaded and dismembered bodies all over down there. They also rarely went into Mexico for “fun” because the cartel knew who they were. This was 20+ years ago so this stuff didn’t just start.

The CIA is the biggest drug cartel of all time
They were running opium from Southeast Asia in the 60s and 70s
Cocain and Weed from Columbia and Mexico in the 80s and 90s
Opium from Afghanistan and still protecting the coke trade from Columbia now
