Conversation with an old Mexican man about Life in Mexico

So talking to an old man who immigrated from mexico tonight about the conditions down there and had some eye opening discussions.
Apparently down there if the cartel needs a skilled worker, they idenifty one, say an electrician. Then they watch him over a period of weeks and learn everything about him. His habits, where he goes, where he lives, where his children go to school, where his wife shops.
Then they approach him one day with an “offer”. To come work for them doing whatever they need, and they’ll pay him.
Then they ask if he wants to talk to his children and hold the phone to his ear so he can hear them. Then another one with his wife, etc.
Basically no choice.
plata o plomo
Silver, or lead.
Then he told me another story about the cartel. Some politician decided he was going to push back against the cartel.
The cartel went to a police station, threw grenades inside, opened fire with automatic weapons and rocket launchers. Even shot down a police chopper with a rocket launcher.
Then they took two greyhound buses full of women and children and killed them and burned their bodies in barrels, just to send a message.
He told me that they have Mexican special forces, military, some that trained at fort Benning for some anti-terrorism stuff, to fight the cartels.
Well once they returned, the cartel started to recruit them, offer them a lot of money, and slowly but surely they recruited the special forces into the cartel.
And they just “disappear” anyone who crosses them.
He told me they have so much money, one higher up bought 10 luxury vehicles and then set them on fire just to show how much money he had.
That they’ll round up people that cross them, their families, and bring them out somewhere. Then tie them down and chainsaw their limbs off while they are still alive, making the others watch.
I knew it was bad but this was eye opening.

Call me when they start putting someone who checks their crawfish traps... In their crawfish traps.

Yeah, that sound like drug cartels alright.

That was the 72 students he’s referring to more than likely. Still haven’t found their corpses
Amazing with all the resources at their disposal that the cartels freely operate with impunity

All he said was true and worse. Use to watch the cartel beheadings with chainsaws on Ogrish.

Enough phosphorous and you could change their minds.

I'm just getting into Narcos: Mexico and early on, they lay the groundwork for why the Mexicans are far more brutal and bloodthirsty than the Colombians ever were.
Plus, I just met El Chapo, so I have that going for me.

The Zetas are the Mexican military that went over to the other side. Of course all the Zetas are not ex military now but that's how the group started. Yes, some of them trained at Benning. The cartels so far have not been able to corrupt the Mexican Marines and the government uses them for the major counter narco operations.

You’d have to launch an all out war against them. And there would be a LOT of civilian casualties. These cartels do not care about human life whatsoever.

Borderland Beat covers all that shite pretty well.

With organizations with enough firepower, you strangle them through financial means rather than physical coercion.
Now, I don't know how that can be done. It's way above my paygrade and ability. However, I do know that their love of money is the primary vector for victory.

Yeah, that’s what he said. His English was good but heavily accented, he said he learned English by going over a book, line by line and page by page, each night and when he was waiting for work.
He talked about another one that I couldn’t quite catch the name with his accent.
Something related to El Chapo.
He was talking something about a prison full of cartel, where they owned all the guards and police, 35,000 just waiting,’like a personal army. Something like that. It was a little hard to understand it all

Should have let Escobar run his show tbh and wouldn’t have been too bad.
Only way the cartels can be defeated is if the US military invades Mexico to go after them

Yea let’s just have open borders, sounds good.
Geeezus.

All this is true which is why we need to BUILD THAT WALL!

That's how they took down the Cali cartel. In Medellin, taking out Escobar and, more importantly, his cousin who actually was the brains behind the organization was enough to break the cartel's back. Cali was a smarter and more agile organization that fell apart based on the testimony of the men who knew how the finances worked. Once the Americans had that info in hand and started extraditing people who thought they were untouchable, it was all over for Cali.

Yep. This is the kind of shite that goes on down there.
There’s a reason Trump wants a wall built, and keeping this type of shite out is part of it. I’m not saying a wall will work, but it will keep some fricker from walking across the border to do business. They already use the bridges to hang bodies from.

The Colombian cartels were strong enough that they believed they could take over the country militarily and began making moves in that direction. At that point the government realized it was fight or die, and crushed them. When the Mexican elites perceive that the narcos are an existential threat and not someone they can be in bed with, they will get serious about defeating them.
