Does anyone know what the fine is for starting construction without a permit on residential property in Jefferson Parish?

Original plans was to redo all of our kitchen cabinets and upgrade the appliances, so I started the task of pulling out the cabinets and fur down. Now wife wants to remove a wall and replace with an island. Naturally, we need a permit bc of nosey neighbors. Went to Code Enforcement and they told me as I was walking out to not touch the cabinets bc that would be considered a violation of starting construction w/o a permit.

Just apply for a demo-only permit so you aren't sitting on your hands while plans get updated and re-reviewed.

I never got a permit for cabinet work before. You need a permit to remove a load bearing wall, you need permits if you do plumbing or electrical work. Never heard of needing a permit for cabinets.

Are your neighbors that nosey?
Can you load and haul debris from your backyard?

If it's your land and your house you don't need any permit for construction

Say what?

Pretty sure you don't need a permit for that. It's not a structural component.

Look it up in your town code to see if they are full of it.

Eta: the cabinets not the possible load bearing wall.

If you want to see if a wall is load bearing, go up into the attic and map out the joists and trace the load direction.

1. Pics?

2. Better get an engineer to make sure it ain't load bearing.

As long as it doesn't violate any ordinances or anyone else enjoyment of their property.... from what I've learned, no permit is needed.

No way that is legit. At what point of removal of cabinets is it considered construction that requires a permit? Can I take the doors off to refinish, without a permit?

In that line of thought, what about a regular door? Interior or entry...Can I remove them and replace without a permit? Pretty sure I can. What the hell is the difference?

Jefferson Parish is the worst. Prepare thy anus. They require a permit and two inspections for a driveway to be poured. You done messed up bro.

Why the hell would you apply for a building permit to replace your cabinets and appliances? You should have just done the work.

Usually they wont fine you as long as you comply with their requests after the stop work order is implemented. Just play stupid at that point.

FYI, the permit office will always tell you you have to have a permit regardless if your removing an Ant mound in the back yard or adding a second floor to your house because its money for them. Just move along with your project and dont worry about the fine and if you get busted set your neighbors house on fire like Wick suggested.

Holy crap! I wonder how different it is where I live. Changing a toilet requires a license? An electrical outlet or switch? What a fricking scam!

I'm almost positive that as long as the job is under $7500 that whoever does it does not need a piece of paper to qualify them to do the job.
