Because I quote projects and need to physically write notes, highlight things, etc on plans.
None of those things can be done without a printer? I don't care about environment impact, but I hate dealing with toner and printers at home, so I try to do everything digitally unless it is just too cumbersome.

Been buying Sabre printers for a while now. Big fan.

The secret to a happy office life is an HP printer
HP is the world’s worst about the stuff. Now they block third party cartridges completely. To give you “the best experience “.
I bought and older laser printer on Ebay so that I could use it with older operating systems I play around with in VirtualBox, and it gives me zero guff about third party toner. These new printers are shite. It’s like buying a Mustang, and then discovering that you’re only allowed to use gasoline sold by Ford.

Yup. They want you to sign up for their printer program. A scam.

I don't do a lot of printing but do scan a lot of stuff.
A few months ago, there was an Epson update which rendered my aftermarket ink cartridges useless.
The other part is, I can't even scan with it anymore.
I promply went out and bought a Canon Eco Tank. Still liked the Epson better.

This is why I stick with dot matrix for my IBM-compatible Tandy home computer.

We got a new HP printer earlier this year. Ran out of the initial ink and the mfer now says we HAVE TO register for an ink delivery service in order to print a sheet. I ordered new ink from amazon, installed it and still get the message.
About to toss it all in the garbage.

Brother B&W laser printer/scanner/fax/hand jobber from Costco - runs like a beast. Just replaced my first toner after almost two years.
If I need to print in color (rarely) I send it to the Office Depot down the street.

Personal printers are all shite.

Mine looks almost exactly like that one, might even be the same, and it works amazingly well.

I bought a Brother all-in-one monochrome printer at the end of 2016 and run about a case of paper (5,000 pages) through it a year and it has been flawless. It takes the 3rd party toner cartridges just fine. The high yield cartridges last me about 2,500 pages and I get 4 of the third-party cartridges for under $40 so $10 per 2500 pages. I can't say if the newer Brother printers block out the 3rd cartridges but it is hard to beat that cost per page for printing at home. Including paper, it is about 1.4 cents per page because basic paper is about $50 a case.

The GOAT...
Somehow with all the new advances in technology, a printer made in 1993 is the best of all time.

In all seriousness, like upvotes x1000 for this one. Printers are one of those utterly shiddy things.

Brother printers have been really reliable for me and economical to boot.
It's a black and white network printer (with wifi) and its been solid for about 10 years now.

I've got HP and Lexmark printers, because they were cheap at the time. But the cost of the ink cartridges make them unbearable.
I picked up a Brother laser printer a few years ago on Black Friday, it isn't even wifi... no big deal. Like everyone else, I have a lot of old PCs and laptops sitting around, no longer able to do much. One is an Asus EEE, the little 9" laptop that could barely run Windows XP. I slapped Puppy Linux on it, downloaded the Linux drivers for the Brother printer, and made it a static IP address so I don't have to hunt for it when my router reboots. It's now just the wifi front end for that printer.
Amazon sells cheap toner cartridges for something like $25 a 2 pack.

I feel like the rule of thumb with printers is the cheaper it is up front, the more expensive the toner is. Not always the case, you have expensive Epson, HP, Canon models that are just expensive to have.
In 10 years with this unit I've only had to replace the fuser once, and that's when I did a deep clean to get any toner buildup off. The high capacity toner cartridge has been pretty good, we go through one about every year depending on how much the kids need to print for school.
