The issue is that they lack context to understand the societal norms of the 1950- 1970 era. Learning those norms and how people responded to them is what should shape how we go about civil actions today.
Very well stated.
Now, how do we go about educating people about the realities of that era? It's obvious that public schools aren't doing it, so who's going take up the mantle of judging the content of one's character and not the color of one's skin.
BTW, the following text is from MLK's "I Have A Dream" speech:
quote:
But there is something that I must say to my people, who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice: In the process of gaining our rightful place, we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred. We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again, we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force.
Quite appropo for today.

Whether you consider it a race issue or class issue. That does not matter. It is an issue that affects a much larger percentage of blacks than whites. It is something that needs to get fixed.
Not targeting you first off just using this idea. How can so many black people claim to be at a financial disadvantage in these types of situations but quick to point out "more white people are on welfare than black?"

There are a multitude of issues that all needs to get addressed.
How about the community stop addressing bullshite problems and start addressing the real issues? Maybe even stop letting people like Al and Jesse pimp themselves for nothing and actually try to do something worthwhile?

One example was there were several teachers who retired to the area that were respected state wide. They started doing part timework at this school and they were released because the school told them they were looking for black teachers. But the teachers they hired in their place couldn't pass the necessary tests to become certified. Now the school is left hanging down two teachers and might have to combine several classes
What kind of public school doesn't require certified teachers? The private schools here in La don't but every public school does. That's a shame.

Also, a lot of the kids are abused at home and many of the teachers just dont really care. There were a few times when a kid would be telling the teacher and the teacher would assume the kid is lying only to find out that they were long later.
i could go on and on.
None of that is the teacher's fault. The blame falls on the parents.

I have nothing to do with Al or Jesse or what they do. There are people addressing real life problems. But that type of thing goes much more unheard then Al and Jesses big mouth.

1. Yes, the school did have a requirement to employ certified teachers. The people they hired were in grad school and failed their certification tests and therefore could t be hired, leaving them without time to search for proper teachers. The point being, that wouldn't have happened if they hadn't told people that they were employing people based on skin color.
2. It's a teacher's responsibility to do due dillegence in reporting possible issues.

ETA2: Y'all are stupid as frick. I went to private school and graduated with 3 black kids out of 70
What does this have to do with opportunity, do private schools not let in minorities?
It's the parents. I went to one of the best public schools in GA. Why? Because parents move to certain districts for their child even if it means having further commutes to work. Usually those areas with good schools have parents that are involved and the community takes pride in the school.
Just going by demographics of the state, it makes sense the States with higher black populations have shittier public schools. Because they aren't placing a higher value on education.
Other races have no issue excelling in school. Blacks need to stop placing blame on everyone but themselves.

The vast majority of black kids I went to school with didn't give two shits about being there, studying, listening, following rules or anything but being a damn thug. Maybe, just maybe that has something to do with it.

this issue really has nothing to do with race, but moreso societal class
poor white people will struggle with educational opportunities the same way poor black people will
What a load of bullshite. Whites and blacks may have the same educational opportunities, at least until college when blacks magically get gifted over 200 points on their SATs by admissions departments, but the difference is whites are way more likely to succeed even with limited opportunities. To go even further Asians are far more likely to succeed than whites when provided with the same opportunities and they get docked 50 points on their SATs by college admissions boards.
Picture a classroom full of poor 9th grade black kids, then one filled with poor 9th grade white kids and then one filled with poor 9th grade Asian kids. Do you see the kids in all of those classrooms putting the same amount of effort in? Is their behavior the same? Are they paying attention in the same way? Be honest with yourself.
It has everything to do with race and anyone who says otherwise has their head in the sand. Until people stop spewing BS and actually confront reality, even though people don't like to hear the truth, race relations will never change.

There are problems with both public schools (funded by regional property tax) and with a basic lack of parental interest/involvement in their children's education.
If you don't read to your children they won't learn to read until much later than their peers. If you don't help them with their homework - or at least stay on them to do their homework then they won't do it, because you haven't instilled in them the importance of the same.
There is less opportunity in bad public schools with violence and poor funding - but immigrant families in the same situations overcome this within 1 or 2 generations. That points to the crucial components of success being cultural.

lack of educational opportunities of blacks.
I visited a thatched hut school outside Tema, Ghana a few years ago. One of the kids ran 3 miles to school every day. He had found an old tire innertube, and rigged it on his feet for shoes.
He never complained. What he really wanted was a pair of shoes. So he wouldn't be late to school. He didn't want a bicycle. He didn't want a Blue Bird bus with A/C and a phone in his pocket.
Educational opportunities for blacks in America exceed those for blacks anywhere in the world. Those who say different just don't know what they're talking about.

There is a culture in heavily black areas that denigrates education. Going to college is the same thing as selling out.
Two of my kids went to a school in the 7th grade in Jacksonville that was majority black. They went to school there because the school had and advanced placement math program that was extremely good. There was a meeting at the school on one occasion, where a black lady complained that she was unable to give their child the tutoring that they needed, because she didn't have the math background to help out. My wife suggested that the lady bring her child to the after school tutoring program (in which my daughter was one of the tutors). The lady told my wife that "black kids don't want no white kids tutoring them".
If my kid was in the same situation, I would have whooped them before I let them turn down tutoring because of race. Stupid is as stupid does.

I have read multiple postings on this board and in other social media referencing the lack of educational opportunities of blacks.
You should be an authority on this. You are black. You come from a crappy little town with a crappy little school system. You were surrounded by good kids and dickheads.
You got a BS in Physics from La Tech. While it was an odd and poor choice, you got an EE masters from SUBR.
What was the difference for you in your education from 6-18?
