There is no legitimate reason Alabama should be on Central Time in any of these scenarios

I would much prefer living on the western edge of a time zone, instead of the eastern edge.
Getting dark earlier than others all year long is not advantageous.

There should be more support for just splitting the difference, changing the clock one last time, and calling it done.

We want people to be healthier?? Then the more light in the afternoon/evening the better. People are more active when the sun is up.

As opposed to 5:15?

Yes, 5:15 would be significantly better.

I surely don't.

You working baws do whatever you want with the clock. I haven't set an alarm in years. Just last night I was working in my woodshop until 3 am.

Considering all of preferences for one or the other, this might just be the best option to actually stop changing our clocks.

This is incorrect. Time zones are based off of 0° longitude (axis) with a time zone boundary 7.5° longitude on each side of the axis. (15° in each zone with 0° being the centerline). Therefore, the eastern time zone/central time zone boundary should be at 82.5° west. that would put all of Alabama in central time as it should be.

So an axis for each time zone would be at 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90, etc…. New Orleans couldn’t be more perfect for central time since 90 degrees west longitude runs directly through the city. Thus, Central time SHOULD run from 82.5 west to 97.5 west, but it doesn’t for a number of reasons.

Why does the top option look like the worst of the the 3 yet we are still doing it?

I live in that dark part of Texas. It’s 4:30 and it’s starting to get dark

There's much more after school activities now than in the 70s. So the kids are in the dark in the morning or afternoon. I recently say a poor sap bicycling home from work in the dark at 5:30 pm, that is very dangerous.

It’s called STANDARD TIME for a fricking reason.

Not quite. The ads had kids waiting for the bus in pouring rainstorms in the dark.

I remember parents complaining about it on the local news...

It wasn't ads on TV...

I actually agree that it getting dark at 5 sucks for the 3 or so months it happens, but I'd rather have that than spending hours of my morning in the dark. Plus, the sun goes down too damn late during the summer anyway imo. 95 degrees at 8:15pm sucks.

Yep.

The % of people who would actually like DST after a year is much smaller than the people who want it now. Mostly because people aren't thinking ahead and/or they don't understand the ramifications of year-round DST.

It's not an argument. DST year round would lead to worse health outcomes. We've already tried, we've already failed, we have the data.

If we stop switching the clocks, we are going standard time.

We are currently in standard time and most people in the central time zone hate it.

What I don’t get is those same people celebrating trump trying to abolish DST. I guess they just don’t know the difference between DST and standard.

Standard would be fine in the summer. Sunset at 8pm is late enough.

Increase in obesity, heart attack, stroke, etc.

Because as much as people like the extra hour of daylight, it's misaligned with our natural circadian rhythms. Natural circadian rhythms do not vary much. Almost everyone on this board is neither a natural night owl or early riser. It's very rare to have a circadian rhythm that is not in tune with what we already have a clock for; standard time.

Really I prefer the light longer in evenings and couldn't really care less if it's darker in the mornings.

But, financially, longer "afternoons" are so much better. I have a shop and there's always a big difference in business when it's dark at 5pm regardless of weather.
