They don't drill the basics. I like some of the thinking outside the box things, but Imo they need to have kids still memorize basic addition subtraction etc.

But when I see 5X3 I think "5 three times" aka 3 groups of 5. That's just how it reads and I honestly don't see how you would think its 5 groups of 3 unless you were specifically taught that.
ETA, 5 multiplied by 3. The number is 5, and it occurs 3 times. 5X3=5+5+5 to me

Multiplication tables do the trick just fine. There's a time to learn the story behind the math, and that's word problems.

Looks to me like the kid couldn't follow directions. Probably has parents that don't have time for no Common Core learnin.

The methods that I've seen being used seem ridiculous, but props to them for teaching arrays at that young of an age (even though, like you said, it's wrong).

That said, it does make sense 5x3, or 5 times 3. That means 5 times you have a group of 3, therefore it's 3+3+3+3+3 and not 5+5+5. Yes it's a nitpicky thing but technically the teacher is right.

The question doesn't specify 5 groups of 3. It just says use repeated addition. Pretty fricking lame if you ask me.

Common Core focuses on helping kids develop a deeper understanding of the concepts they're being taught. The kid getting points off for his answer is not the result or decision of Common Core. It was the teacher's decision -- or a result of her or the administration's poor understanding of Common Core -- and I don't necessarily agree that she should've deducted points. The student not only provided the correct answer, but also demonstrated an understanding of the problem and how to solve it; that's all Common Core is trying to promote, not strict enforcement of specific methods. I would've given him full credit while still bringing to his attention the issue of semantics in the directions.

No, it doesn't. It means the number 5 occurs 3 times. That's how I would read it. 5 multiplied my 3. 3 groups of 5
