No. It doesn't.

Although I said we could look to Finland, I do think you are being a little dramatic here. It seems like there are many parents who need to go back to school so they can gain some education to teach their kids.

5x3 = 3x5
5+5+5 = 3+3+3+3+3

Then they need to quit cutting education in order to hire more individuals for the classroom. They also need to raise the standards for teaching such as a minor in the content area you wish to teach. Of course this would not apply to many primary teachers because the content is pretty low. They should also raise the pay in order to make it more attractive to individuals and could improve the level of teaching.

I agree that that's what 5x3 means, but what's the point of forcing a kid into one way of thinking? Math problems can be solved in many different ways. If a kid understands the commutative property of multiplication before it's taught in class, then let the kid answer the question that way.
Ding fricking ding.

Stupid teacher. There's nothing really wrong, IMO, with teaching the different strategies, but there were clearly two ways to do this and the teacher just doesn't understand it and should not be teaching math.

Who wasn't taught that in school?

I was..it's called simple multiplication. I don't need to draw a picture for it.

That is actually 5 sets of 3. So technically, the student got the problem wrong. The parents should be thankful it was just -1.

This is not a Common Core problem. The standards being tested are fine. The teacher chose to implement them in this way.
