Wait till the kid gets to 4th grade. You will want to beat your face in with a baseball bat figuring out their homework.

This common core is legit setting our youth up for failure.

Agree. I was planning to come into this thread to be a smart arse to the OP, but I gotta agree with him/her on this, and you. Mind as well ask them to translate it into Japanese and then German and then Chinese and then back into English.

Thanks, David. Not that hard. Just trying to help them understand the concept of regrouping.

Yep. I think the pushback on a lot of the weirdness of common core is it trying to teach kids to think more abstractly about the math to get more to the essence of what they are doing rather than going through memorized motions to end up at an answer that you aren’t sure what it even means. We’ve all been hardwired to think of it a certain way and I get it, but I think teaching them this way is beneficial as well.

That is unclear as frick. Whoever wrote that is garbage, and the editor who put it through is garbage.

I know this is a knock on math requirements thread, but if you have two children only seven months apart then your Ole lady is one helluva woman.

Bravo but the instructions are unclear. Poor kids.

But I will say that the kid is shown this shite at school and should know what kind of pic they’re looking for.

What is the point of this? Seriously, what is the goal by teaching math this way?

So that they understand math and not just procedures.

It is application of knowledge of more than one skill. The student know what it means because they do it often.

Conservatives voters cried because America was falling being in our math scored compared to other nations (how do not b educated and test all students.) So educators come up with a newer system to help. Then Conservatives cry because they don't understand the new system.

Looks like the Baton Rouge Diocese "officially" leaves adoption of Common Core up to the local schools; however, if you look at the Diocese's 2nd grade math curriculum link, it's word for the word the same as the national Common Core 2nd grade math curriculum.

BR Diocese

National Common Core Standards

My educated guess is that your kid's school is using Common Core standards. You just don't realize it.

ETA: School and districts have become savvy enough to not use that ugly word "Common Core," so use create synonyms that mean the same thing instead.
