My common core math isn’t adding up. Or maybe it is. I don’t know anymore.

I assumed that. Sorry. It was a childish joke. Was kind of hoping to hear about a couple of wild nights in Vegas that resulted in two children born seven months apart, though. That would have been a good story to hear/read on a Wednesday night ride home from work..

Just wait until your child reaches the seventh grade and he or she is doing probability and statistics. I kid you not. Been there done that bought the T-shirt.

Wants them to draw 2 10s and 4 1s, then 1 10 and 14 1s, then say how they are the equal.

This is an English fail, not math.

Common core math seems to be teaching the average student the ways that the top 10% of students the ability to figure out math the way the top 10% have already figured out.

Rote memorization is probably better for the majority, as they don’t have the intellectual capability of understanding these self-inherent “shortcuts” that the top 10% understand inherently.

Common Core is going exactly according to their plan by making smart kids dumb by forcing them to use these philosophies.

You wrote the question in the OP, didn't you?

Jeez y'all are some mad motherf'ckers. I have a 2nd grader and she's way better at math that I was in the 80's.

Looks like somebody needs to learn common core English.

However, this conservative doesn’t equate the falling test scores to how math is taught. Seeing as we were consistently in the at least top 10 of scores in international standings up until about oh, 1979. What happened in 1979 you ask? Why, only the greatest department in all the land was founded, the Department of Education.

Test grades have steadily declined since then.

This is all it is. People traditionally "good" at math in the past were able to add and multiply in their heads because they figured out the common core philosophy on their own: 57 + 37 + 12 = 80 + 14 + 12 = 100 + 6 = 106

Second grade is for intro to quick pics.
By ninth grade they will ready for all the other kinds of pics.

What is the point of this? What fundamental skill are they trying to teach?

After having 3 kids go through the CC math, best I can tell is they're trying to teach the shortcuts we old school people use in our heads.

Like if someone asked me what 12x17 is, in my head I would do 12x10 plus 12x7. Or if they asked what 53+21 is I would do 5+2 and 3+1.

Of course, when we learned these shortcuts we already knew simple arithmetic so it was much easier to comprehend. My baby girl REALLY struggled with common core math. My boys, thankfully, are just naturally gifted at math so they didn't have many problems. That said, the most gifted of the three is AWFUL at quick math...like say he's playing darts and needs to add up the 3 shots, it takes him a good while.

It's an awful, awful strategy which is leaving a lot of otherwise gifted kids struggling with basic math.

I remember drawing squares at that age. I assume visualization helps to make the numbers "real".
