The method used in the OP is utterly dumbfounding. I have a child going through it currently and it slows her down. Luckily, she goes to a school that teaches the old, better method in addition to this new, inefficient method and students are allowed to use either. For instance, for subtracting double digit numbers, she can stack and subtract them in a matter of seconds but when she has to group in tens/ones it takes several minutes.

The people that devised this new system where incredibly short-sighted. People who can group in tens/ones and do math quickly in their head, can only do so because they learned the fundamental basics of math early on.

And the data is showing, fairly conclusively, that this method is retarding the math proficiency in our youth. The past year's math proficiency scores were the lowest in decades nationwide.

I upvoted you for using integrals.

100% certain the OP's kids teacher did not take Cal 1 or Cal 2

iw, you have to meet with teacher, see an example.
From now on stay on top of it.
In other words have the child totally dependent on the state to teach them with zero help at home. I do not like or approve at all.

I have to help a 4th grade and a 3rd grade with this common core bull.

Yet I still don't understand your 2nd grade common core.

I've googled about common core so much with my kids that I wonder what I would do if the internet wasn't a thing.

So this is why our ACT math scores have dropped so much. Motherfrickers are trying to draw out pictures when you have to answer 60 questions in an hour.
