Idk what percentage I fall in, but I got a 31 ACT & a 1330 SAT but I don't math like I've read 10%ers in this thread posted.
I always just followed the steps & applied the math to real life. Mostly sports/stats helped me relate the material. I always had teachers that showed us WHAT the math we were doing was helping us to solve in real life. When anyone would say "when am I ever going to use this", they'd have the examples. That solved a lot of issues, IMO.
This was public school in Lafayette at that.

Yeah I did well when I could contextualize it. Statistics is fun for me.
I think learning to program taught me how to communicate math with others. If I can tell a computer or spreadsheet to do something...I can definitely tell a human.

You should teach your kid 2 things:
1 - real math
2 - how to troll the teacher.....every time the teacher calls on your kid about math (let's say "what is 10 + 10), have your kid answer with something like "dog" or "potato" or some other stupid shite like that.

OP, grandson is in second grade. Feel your pain. Someone needs to write a book, "Common Core for dummies".

A 7 year old sits in class with a teacher and a textbook and learns what this all means and what's expected. Any adult should be able to take said textbook and figure it out in 2 minutes.

Common core homework

I spoke to a friend recently about this, apparently they are forced to teach this abstract SJW math in private school as well.
It is not actually common core, but one step closer to normalcy. I shouldn't even be making this post, because I cannot think of what it is called.
From what I can tell, it is a blend of both. For the most part, my kids are doing math that resembles what I was taught. There are the occasional "number bond" and things like this.... but none of the ridiculous shite from common core that just adds 50 steps to a 2 step problem.

It’s basic math, why draw shite?
This is exactly right. I am an engineer and don't have the slightest clue what to do there.
Also, when kids get older they need simple addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to be automatic in order to solve more complicated problems quickly.
No one in the real world has time to draw out boxes on a piece of paper for God's sake. This shite is retarded.

Abstract art. Give you kid some crayons to write in the answer.

You must assume that the students previously received an orientation and witnessed an example.
Lets assume two tens boxes and 4 ones does job1.
Then we draw ten ones/boxes inside one of the tens.
If you ever saw it done once you would be ok.
Fwiw, you have to meet with teacher, see an example.
From now on stay on top of it.
Don't expect to be able to help a bright 5th grader if you have do a rescue in February of 2022 with no exposure to lingo and issues beforehand.
