Consumers accustomed to signing for credit card purchases will soon see a change. Starting on April 14, Mastercard, Visa, American Express and Discover are doing away with the requirement that shoppers sign receipts for credit and debit sales. Some merchants may still require signatures but the credit card companies themselves are dropping the stipulation that shoppers provide their autograph.

Mastercard announced the change late last year, effective in April.

Visa said chip-enabled merchants have seen a 66 percent decline in frequency of counterfeit card fraud occurrences over the last two years, as well as a 58 percent decline in counterfeit fraud losses.

It's not like anyone ever verifies the signatures anyway.

Great, so now I won’t feel pressured into tipping a cashier for a pick up order.

Good. It's really stupid that we still sign these. I just usually write my first initial and a line

Yep. I use cards in my wife's name ( with her knowledge) all the time.
I just scribble out a illegible signature to avoid any questions.

My signature is always changing on credit card purchases and never reflects my actual signature anyways. Hell, 75% of the time I just must a make a straight line or something.

Cool. Now I won't have to scribble a squiggly line

Nope, now they will have some extra step on the machine to type in your "tip" before you can pull your card out......Even more awkward than walking away before they realize you left nothing.

Need to start using PINs. Signatures have never been a secure method of verification. I've been signing different names for years.

I hardly ever sign charge slips anymore anyway.

Some places have those electronic touch screens that you sign, but all you have to do is scribble up and down a couple times and press ok.

For several years I have simply been drawing a line on the screen, absolutely no attempt at producing my signature.

I imagine places like Sammy's(we order to-go a couple times a month) will just start asking when they swipe your card.
Or like those Ipad devices do(Ny Bagel, Fresh Junkie, etc), let you add tip on the touch screen.

Coming sooner: no payment required for credit card purchases.

That's how I do it. Suckers let you buy stuff without ever forking over any actual money.

I recently had to cancel my Discover Card and order a new one due to my account being compromised. From what I can tell, the hacker(s) ordered books from Barnes and Noble. They were small charges. But I suspect that had I not noticed, they would have tried eventually to buy something of much greater value.

I know at Papa Johns when online ordering became more popular, customers would include the tip. We call this a 'pre tip' and rarely had customer sign the store copy. We'd Just hand them their copy with the pizza.

Managers got pissed occasionally but frick it.

I hate that stupid chip technology. Samsung Pay is my buddy.
