But I suspect that had I not noticed, they would have tried eventually to buy something of much greater value.
You would be wrong. There is a serious rash of credit card theft where they steal the numbers and only buy a couple of books at barnes and noble, then ditch the numbers. It's really ingenious.
Suspects so far consist of people with glasses and pocket protectors.

In Europe and Australia you don't even need to insert your card, you just tap it on the pad. First time I encountered this was last summer in Sydney. I went to check out and the cashier said just tap it and I was like whaaaat. No the card she said, tap it. Unfortunately U.S. based cards did not have that ability. I missed a good opportunity for a tap or insert it line on her.

frick the chip.
I’m not exactly a fan of the way the chip has been implemented, but it’s waaaay more secure than having a magnetic strip on the back that can literally be read with something no more complex than a cassette tape recorder.

Are you willing to chance it? I wouldn't be.

Yep. I use cards in my wife's name ( with her knowledge) all the time.
I just scribble out a illegible signature to avoid any questions.
Smart - that certainly covers for the fact a dude is using a card with a chick's name. They were probably wondering and on the fence, but your signature ruse put their doubts to rest.

Signing is a waste of time anyways.

What's the point of the chip if there's still a magnetic strip om the card? Seems these card companies need to pick one or the other.
