98 school districts in Colorado do this already. You're not mad because it's going on, you're mad because you found out about it. At the same time you're happy because it gives you another reason to rail on "lazy" teachers while you spend your "workday" posting on TD.

AI can end up being superior teachers and your little rugrats will be at home 7 days a week.

Not only can they pick up on biological/physiological queues better than a human in charge of 40 students would, they can customize their teaching methods and material based on how the individual students learn. This one size fits all education system does a disservice to most.

Great, sounds like it'll do wonders for social skills among peers.....

OK, seriously, folks. Four-day school week works fine in Caldwell Parish. The only real concern was daycare fees on Mondays for parents working all of that day.For whatever reason, that hasn't been that big of a deal.

But otherwise, it's been cheaper for the school system I believe (one day less of school buses running, lunch, air conditioner, etc.), the teachers overall love the extra day off, the yearly required minutes are met, scholastics have been fine (the high school has won some academic awards), and sports and clubs can meet on Monday to get stuff done.

Caldwell has been on the schedule for years now. It's normalcy.

So now households with 2 parents that work are going to get screwed?

People fail to recognize that educating children is the parents' responsibility, along with adequate food, shelter and supervision. Public school is one option parents may choose; however, public school was never intended to be a daycare or babysitting service. When school's not in session, take care of them yourself. How is that screwing anyone?

A friend of mine posted the link on facebook, and several people are chiming in saying they demand that if LA does this, that their property taxes be cut to make up for having to pay for child care on Mondays.

Great idea.

Finland which is often used as a model for education srptresses more play time outdoors, less academic time and little to no homework.

It’s been well established that school and most jobs go Monday to Friday. I can’t imagine it was a coincidence. So yes, requiring the parents to shift around their schedules to account for another day off school is kinda screwing them over. Especially in the example of 2 working parents that now have to pay for daycare for younger kids.

Yea, I guess you overlooked the word corporate which in no way indicates someone wielding a wrench

Correct. Cutting school hours should have no influence on education if you're a decent parent

You missed that a whole parish in Louisiana is already doing it, apparently, without feeling screwed over.

Of course it shouldn’t.

But if parents work Monday to Friday and kids go to school Monday to Friday, then it will put the parents in a bind until the kids are old enough to be on their own.

School as a babysitting service is a bad idea

We're going to move toward remote education anyway, might as well accept it now

By all means, let’s follow the lead of a parish in the worst state in the union for education.

I’m not saying we shouldn’t go to 4 days or that it’ll frick over all parents. I’m just saying it’s shitty for 2 working parents. We need to bring the work week to 4 days too.

That has nothing to do with my post.

I’m talking about the accepted way of things that we’ve had for years. Changing one without the other is going to have disadvantages for families with 2 working parents.

It has nothing to do with schools being babysitters.

I am sure the parents will love finding/paying some entity to watch their kid on the 5th business day

So you just outed yourself as a socialist. Cause you view schools as simply state-sponsored daycare.

Usually teachers are contracted for a certain amount of hours, not days

All teaching contracts I have seen are set by the number of days. Aides are contracted by hours.

Also just putting this out there, but teachers don't get paid well in CO at all.
