Most of Europe has a strong understanding that higher education is not meant for everyone. Even the students.

If you read the article about Finland it goes on to say, that about 60% of students, at age 16, decide to enter a vocational school to learn a trade and enter the workforce.

Agreed but the higher degree of socialism also play a role in that. If parents/students in the USA went into the education system knowing they would be taken care of by the government later on in life, there would be less push back

is this the new math all the kids talk about?

Ya, here's a full equation. See if you can solve it:

I'd rather see cutting the school year short.

Why? 3-4 weeks off in the summer should be enough. If that.

and daycare providers rejoice.

We take them out of school with educated folks trying to teach them something and put them in a stinky arse daycare with no direction.

Not to mention what will happen with all the 11-15 year olds home alone with time on their hands.

Wut

There would be enormous outrage. Mainly along racial lines

Finlands welfare programs are far more functional than ours because of a very strong Lutheran work ethic. The government doesn't"take care of people" unless you're dysfunctional or ynemployed which is usually brief there

Finland has a vested interest in seeing their citizens at work. Their national pension plan is outstanding. Which is all the more reason to have people apprentice a job they would like and begin it at the age of 19, rather than wilt away in college, toiling around and not finding gainable employment until 25 or 26.

Parents usually have options for summer care, summer care that occurs all five work days.

We throw far too much money at education for the return.

quote:

The United States spent more than $11,000 per elementary student in 2010 and more than $12,000 per high school student. When researchers factored in the cost for programs after high school education such as college or vocational training, the United States spent $15,171 on each young person in the system — more than any other nation covered in the report.

quote:

That sum inched past some developed countries and far surpassed others. Switzerland's total spending per student was $14,922 while Mexico averaged $2,993 in 2010. The average OECD nation spent $9,313 per young person.

quote:

As a share of its economy, the United States spent more than the average country in the survey. In 2010, the United States spent 7.3 percent of its gross domestic product on education, compared with the 6.3 percent average of other OECD countries. Denmark topped the list on that measure with 8 percent of its gross domestic product going toward education.

Basically education for a large part of the population is high tech daycare

So, you don't think that anything can be implemented for Mondays? I wonder what all the school systems that are already using the four day week are doing?

That will cost thousands in daycare costs to parents.

Germany and other countries use this model as well. America should do the same.

If you're dumb at 16, chances are you're not going to wake up one morning and be Albert Einstein.

I don't take issue with you or Roger's point, I'm just trying to emphasize that America's diverse population makes it different from Finland. We had this same debate back in the 80s when Asian kids were really starting to kick our arse academically. Many pointed to the fact that other countries have less diversity which makes it easier to establish and promote certain "norms"- like academic achievement.

I agree the idea of steering the kids to vocational careers if they are better suited for such. I'll be interested to see how the Universities feel bout that though. They seem to like getting all the money that comes with all the kids going to college.

It's called planning and budgeting. Parents can be infinitely accountable for their children and this still cause issues. But nice try at being cute.

Well that six figure salary for your Associate Assistant Deputy Commissioner on Trans-Gender Relations isn't going to pay itself...

Vocational schools would alter a traditional colleges education offerings. For the better.

Hell, I have a Bachelors in a field where most of my peers went to a technical college and received an AA.

Vocational schools would eliminate shite majors and focus on specialities. Really what value is being added from someone with a Gender Studies degree? Or Art history?

LSU probably has over 200 bachelor degree options, frick that nonsense. 75% of those could be learned in a vocational school.

Nah, that was posted out of frustration from a teacher's standpoint. Frustration from what you're looked at as being from many parents' point of view, not saying that you are a member of that group.

just wait until the free / subsidized lunch crowd gets free "day care" once a week while the poor white sumbitches making a household 57,000 have to pay an extra $120 a month.
