Cue the "teachers don't work enough" thread.

Our education calendar really hasn't changed since the days of kids working on the farm. I don't know if this is a good idea or not, but at least they are trying something different.

Adding 40 minutes a day doesn't make up for cutting a day, even removing the time on the 5th day spent on lunch, changing classes, beginning and end of day, recess, etc. So I'm curious how they will get the same amount of work done.

I imagine classes will go an extra week or so as well.

I am sure the parents will love finding/paying some entity to watch their kid on the 5th business day

Sounds like a boon for after-school daycare programs.

I don't think "Hi boss, I need a 4 day work week for daycare purposes." will fly for many people.

Who is this supposed to benefit, other than teachers and admin, in theory? Will just end up costing parents more money, and for what?

If the number of days of the current calendar != the new calendar, teacher effectively received a pay raise for doing absolutely nothing.

Usually teachers are contracted for a certain amount of hours, not days

It's as if some of y'all are too bothered to read anything before commenting.

Look at all the parents mad because they have to be accountable for their own kids.

But they don't.

The school is still taking them, just charging parents directly instead of via taxation. Formalizing the daycare business model they have claimed to be for years.

Do you have any idea of the cost of childcare? 1 day a week can easily be a car payment

The district will do it for $30 a week, per kid. So $120 a month, per kid.

Only $30, if you send them to "daycare" at school that day.

$30 per student, with 18,000 students in district, AND a 3 day weekend.

This was about teachers and admin, and that's fine. Perks to recruit talent and all. But it's not about education.

not sure how it would translate to the youths, but I would guess if you studied it long enough in adults, the increase in productivity would far offset the loss in time

Multiple schools around me in southwest MO have done this for a few years now. They’ve done a ton of studies/surveys and a majority of the parents have been surprisingly pleased with the format.
