Go for the money. In other words, take the best deal he's offered. If LA Tech offers the most $, go to LA Tech, because student loan amounts (for parents and for students) adds up REALLY fast.
I have 2 in college and the FAFSA gov't loan totals are getting scary.

Depending on his major, one of the best and easiest scholarships at LSU is the S&B Engineers Brookshire Scholarship. He may not be allowed to apply until his 2nd semester but it is for those that work and go to school for a combined 30 hrs (15 school and 15 work). It pays $3500 / semester straight cash. It's available to anyone in the college of engineering with a 2.5 GPA (
). Usually have to apply at the beginning of each semester with the pay out a month or so before the end of the semester.

That $3500 hit my bank account this past Friday.
All I had to do was prove I worked 15hours and week and was in 15 hours of classes this semester. Plus write a one paragraph thank you note.
Cake.

Yea I got it a few times in my college days. It was fantastic. Hell, my last semester I only needed 9 hrs to graduate but wanted that money (it was going to save me more money by going full time and getting the scholarship) so I took 2 bullshite online classes just to get to 15 hrs.

Yeah I only need 7 hours to graduate next semester so I need to figure out if it'll be worth me going full time or not.

Grade inflation, a 2.5 at any engineering school in the 1970s was a ticket to great opportunites, kids today just think they are smarter.

Point is, as long as the student is working in some form, it's the easiest scholarship to get that I've ever heard.

Reminded me of this WSJ article: You Graduated Cum Laude? So Did Everyone Else

For what it’s worth . My daughter has 28 on ACT and 3 point something gpa and it’s 8,000 a year at Bama. Trying to get 2 more points and it’s close to full ride.

What does he want to major in?

Who else in the south (besides Bama) offers big scholarships?
What schools don't offer big scholarships?
First of all, what does he want to go to school for? If he is going just to get a history degree or something then don't waste the money. If he is going to be an engineer, I'd encourage him to go to Tech, but as for as schools in the south, take your pick.
You got SouthEastern, Southern Miss, South Alabama, Southern Georgia, South Florida. I could give you a big list of schools in Southern states.

Good to know. Daughter has a high interest in Alabama because of the perception of how much scholarship $ they may offer. School Counselors are also pushing Bama hard. Current GPA is 4.8. ACT last year as a Sophomore was a 30. Taking ACT again in a couple months.
Bama brought more money and perks to the table than anyone else. If your daughter is National Merit finalist no one will come close to the money and perks Bama offers.

He can pay his own way through college if he needs to. I did it and finished 5 years ago in engineering. Even though it isnt the 70s anymore it can most definitely be done.

He could have gone to Harvard at the exact same price at LSU and he is at LSU?
His momma wouldn't let him go....

There are probably 150 kids from SJA, CHS, and BRMHS alone with damn near perfect GPAs and ACTs.
really? That many kids with 36 ACTs
I was gonna say...
There are 16 seniors in this year's graduating class that currently have career 4.0s at CHS (out of a class of about 260). There's probably another 100 that have a career 3.5 or higher.

My daughter is second in her class and scored a 36 on her act. Her mom and I both graduated from LSU but when it came down to scholarships and offers no one could touch Bama. She picked out her dorm in Tuscaloosa last week. We toured Baylor, rice, Tulane, Tcu and LSU. The Bama tour was better than any other and she felt most comfortable there. Athletics be damned it is all about her future and Bama gives her the best opportunity moving forward
Bama is throwing money at Louisiana kids.

It's a good scholarship at Bama for NMF, but there are better. For example, UF, FSU, UCF, USF pay you to go there if you are NMF.

I went through this when my son (NMF, 36 ACT) graduated in 2006. Back then NMF at UF didn't cover everything (believe room & board was on you). Baylor was full ride with a 36 ACT. Oklahoma buys NMF kids too, believe it is a full ride. Also, Tulsa offered full rides for NMF. Schools we visited that get all the smart kids they can handle anyway (so no automatic full rides) were UNC-Chapel Hill, Emory, Rhodes, Rice, and Wash U.
