Which race are you doing?
My wife did the NOLA Half IM (held in April) a couple of years ago, and the morning temps were in the 50's. The water was around 60 degrees. She said it was the coldest she's ever been...even with the wetsuit. I cannot imagine what the water temp will be for you...but good luck with the race itself.

LSU vs. Troy 2008
Was too damn cold. We spent the afternoon at a riverboat casino and made enough playing blackjack to pay for our trip. Some old lady bought our dinner. My dad and I had been talking to her and her friend for an hour at the bar and dad whispered to the bartender to put their tab on our check since we were about to leave for a tailgate. He laughed and said they had already paid our tab.
The game itself was both great and horrible. Probably for fans on both sides. I had like three messages from friends telling me congrats on Troy winning the game. Must have been left in the third quarter. I still don't understand why they didn't just run the ball for no gain every possession and punt. It was too cold in the second half for our receivers to keep making catches.

Water temps should be upper 60s and will probably be the warmest place on race morning. It grabs your breath for a moment, but once you get going you're all good. I'm more worred about the first hour on the bike.
The last time I will have any heat source will be when I get out of my car at like 6:15 am and my core temp is just going to steadily drop till we start to swim. If I can make it through the first 30 minutes or so on the bike, I should be fine.

Circa 1994. Played Men's Open Triples Grass in the Louisville Classic Volleyball Tourney. At the time it was the largest outdoor volleyball tournament in the world. It always takes place the two weekends before the Kentucky Derby.
It was wet and cold. And the grass was mostly mud. They had to keep moving the courts after the games to try and find some grass.
I remember the concessions sold out of hot cocoa and coffee by 10 am. Such a shitty experience.

I've run a few half marathons in very cold weather. Ran the Seaside half marathon in 2009. The day before the race, wore shorts and a t-shirt. A front blew through the night before the race. During the race, the wind chill was mid 20's gust to 30 mph winds. Didn't expect that the first week of March in Florida.

December 28th, 2007... Buffalo Bills game... It was nearly -20 degrees. We tailgated in the car and then went in for maybe 30 minutes.

My coldest sporting event in which I played was my senior year in high school playing a football game the Friday night before Thanksgiving and it sleeted almost the entire game. Our high school had nothing for cold weather for us to use...no blankets, no parkas, no nothing. We just wore our regular short sleeve jerseys.
I've spent parts of 3 winters in Moscow, Russia and I never got as cold as I did that night.

Baseball game. Upper 20s. Baseball is the most miserable sport to play in old weather.

Sailed in a regatta on Lake Pontchartrain when it was like 40 degrees and raining. Not that cold in absolute terms, but that shite was miserable.

Baton Rouge Beach Marathon a few years back (2010?).
My sweat had frozen into ice on the top of my knit hat at one point. I took it off around the 8 mile mark - made it about a half mile before I put that SOB right back on.
I've played a few soccer games around the freezing mark. Soccer is so fricking terrible when it's cold. You never loosen up, and kicking the ball is like kicking a cinder block.

2010 quarterfinals vs redemptorist. Was both wet as cold as hell. Don't remember the temps but it was bad. Semifinals the next week were also cold but it didn't seem as cold.
Ran a couple track and xc meets that were pretty cold as well. But not as bad as those two games.
