Do some people really turn their phones off? Mine has never been off unless I had to restart it

Unless you are specifically on call, 11:00 is unacceptable. Just answer them back the following morning.

I was emailing back and forth with a client at 11pm the other night. He was in Alaska and I was in Louisiana. It’s not uncommon for my West Coast clients to contact me after 5oclock. I’m always accessible

The only time I’ll completely turn my phone off is if I know I don’t have service and I need to save the battery.

Received a text from a client at 10:57pm tonight requesting confirmation of a tracking number while i was trying to watch a film with my wife. This request could have easily waited until the morning.

How would the ot baws deal with such an interuption

This happens to me occasionally and when it does, I know exactly whats going on. The person sending the text realizes that they dropped the ball on something and they are sending me the text in an effort to move the problem from their plate to my plate.

They aren't expecting an answer until I get to the office in morning. By sending the late text, now they dont have to remember anything.

Probably figured you were sleeping but wanted a response sometime in the morning and didn't want to forget.

Isn't calls and texts at all hours for varying degrees of urgency the expectation when you're the point of contact for clients, though? It definitely is in the oilfield service and consulting industries.

If you don't want afterhours low priority contact from clients, you better not give out your cell number.

The following graphic is a good rule of thumb, though I'm not sure anyone IMs or uses twitter for business at this point.

I also get a lot of WhatsApp messages from overseas clients. Mostly Caribbean, Centra and South Americans. They don’t like to text or email for some reason.

Wife (no pics) is a solo practitioner and she gets calls, texts, and emails at night and on Saturdays and Sundays. She always responds or calls back. Good client responsiveness leads to happy clients and future referrals.

my wife gets calls and text from patients on her personal phone, usually asking her to refill or call in a prescription

meh, has to be tempered with some common sense, self restraint, and consideration, not everything is so important that a text has to be fired off at any hour as soon as a thought pops into your head

How are my clients supposed to get in touch with me? I don’t carry a beeper anymore.

Do you not work out of an office away from home? If so, then let them get in touch during normal working hours.

If you work from home, then that presents a different situation, but there have to be some parameters in place so they don't take advantage of the situation like your post mentions. ESPECIALLY for something that isn't extremely urgent and can wait until the next morning.

Yes I have an office, but I’m only there for a few hours a day and not everyday. I’m usually working from my phone or laptop wherever I may be. I’m not chained to a desk.

It’s 2019, people can work from just about anywhere.

Matter of fact, I haven’t been to my office since last Wednesday

I’m a banker and deal with this kind of crap all the time. I’ve gotten to the point where I just don’t answer the trivial requests anymore. If they can’t respect that I have a life I don’t need their business...

By all means, you can wait to respond until morning. Also, they can decide to move their business to someone who is willing to respond to their late night texts. That's how free markets work. If they are your client...it doesn't matter how urgent you think it is.

If you don't want to respond to clients at odd hours, there are plenty of lines of work where you don't have to.

What industry are you in? If it’s O&G, send your customer our way. We will take the business.

If there's no trend/pattern, I would just reply in the morning.

If it is a trend, I'd still wait until the morning, but I'd ask mention it to them and ask to keep non-urgent requests from being sent later in the evening.
