One of China's richest men has been criticized for endorsing the controversial culture of 12-hour workdays in the country's red-hot tech industry, saying employees who worked longer hours will get the "rewards of hard work."

Jack Ma, founder of e-commerce giant Alibaba (BABA), has spoken out on social media in recent days in support of the Chinese work practice known as "996." The number refers to working from 9 am to 9 pm six days a week and is said to be common among the country's big technology companies and start-ups.

"There are way easier places to work, but nobody ever changed the world on 40 hours a week," he posted on social media site Twitter in November last year.

That’s a good reason why there are so many Chinese people that work in America.

Something tells me they aren’t putting up nets outside his office window to catch people committing suicide due to overwork.

That's an Elon Musk quote not Jack Ma. You misread that section.

I remember when I was ship broker it was pretty common to do 12 hour work days on a consistent basis. Wake up early to cover European markets. Normal hours for US markets and then stay late for Asia markets. And then on top of that we were expected to go out immediately after leaving the office to go get shite faced with clients until 1am in the morning. Then wake up hungover at 5am and rinse and repeat for 5 days a week. My friends always bitched about me not going out during the weekends but weekends were basically recover days. It was fun for a couple years but you do get burned out. Mostly from the drinking and lack of sleep, not really the working though.

I routinely do 70+ hour weeks and still workout each night after work. Generally out of bed before 5am on weekdays

Yes I do. I average about 66 hours per week. Several times I’ve done a few weeks around 81 hours back to back
