The reality is that this has to happen eventually. The impending demographic collapse in China is going to force it, so why not rip the band-aide off now?

US imports from China are responsible for ~13%-14% of the US economy and it's a percentage that has been dropping pretty steadily for nearly a decade now.

Meanwhile, the US is responsible for about 2.5%-3% of China's GDP.
Overall, I think this is going to be a wash as Trump is tempering tariffs for companies which re-locate to the US (or at least locate their manufacturing here).

A war with China would be a lot easier if Trump wasn't isolating us and making enemies out of allies. A lot easier to put economic pressure on China if all of our western allies are on board. This is why his "tough love" foreign policy towards allies is dangerous, and the myopic isolationist viewpoint is wrong.
