quote:I'll admit I'm no expert on this subject at all, and I'm probably misunderstanding, or just plain ignorant on the subject, but you're saying the Chinese went to war with the UK for introducing opium into China?
That wasn’t Chinas stance during the opium wars in facts they went to actually war with the UK for bringing in drugs that was killing their population
eta- NVM, just googled it. I've never read up on it, and always assumed opium had been around in China forever. Learned something new. Thanks.

The US doesn't get as much manufactured from China as they did 10 years ago, but its still enough that if a war broke out between us and China, if the US pulled all of its manufacturing out of China, their economy would take a pretty big hit.
As for as the Tariffs. I have no idea of its good or bad for the US, I guess we will find out, but 25% seems like a significate increase. If it is strictly about fentanyl.. Put a 10% increase and if that doesn't do it, 15% and so on. That way you are saying you are willing to go as high as possible until they do something about the problem.
50% of US trades come from 5 countries. Mexico, Canada, Germany, Japan and China. For China that's several hundred billion dollars a year and I just dont think think they are going to put that at risk, but it wouldn't surprise me if some hackers hacked into systems that allows them to shut down power in a few big cities and shut things down for a half day.. day.. a few days only for China to send a message to the white house "Did your power go out? What a shame. Next time it might stay off longer".

I enjoy the chaos and the entertainment. But as an Econ guy, if I’m being honest, this could be catastrophic. Basic micro and macro economics should have been required in HS.

It’s risky move …
My dad warned me about China in the 70s. He said
“we think the Japanese are difficult business men, wait till we start dealing with the fricking Chinese. We plan in quarters. They plan in decades.. “

Their neighbor Japan tried that back in 1941.
Try it.
I’m old and I’m sick of yall anyway —especially after Covid.

They are going to war with one of their largest customers? That should be helpful for their economy.
Im not sure how the US could fight them long with our dependence on their manufacturing much of our daily goods.
Sounds like a lose, lose situation to me.

One child policy
Massive infusion of cash into the real estate market inflating development
Etc
They really are shitty business men

Dealing with them just requires a little bit of spine and a willingness to drink and eat weird shite occasionally. Its not bad at all.

do we have enough bullets?

I understand what you’re saying. I’m simply pushing back on the notion that every Chinese businessman is some sage, wise guru that never thinks short term game and is always playing some much longer, larger game.
I hate how quarterly driven many of our publicly traded companies are, but to act like China doesn’t ever make stupid decisions because they want short term gains is simply not correct.

Jeezus Christ, people.
Have some fricking perspective.
Maybe put more than one second's worth of thought into it.
The US and China are not going to go to war (in the military sense) over tariffs.

I don't quite remember fentanyl as being the sole reason for tariffs.
I thought it was an eye for an eye. What you charge we charge for equality.
