You don't need children to live a fulfilling life. You don't need to be married to be happy. Many people have lived miserable lives because they thought they needed to have of one or both of these, and by the same token many lives are enriched by marriage and/or children. Be very careful and do your homework before you jump into either. Learn from other people's mistakes. Don't be pressured into traditional relationships. Do what makes you happy.

I don't think there's a woman in the world I wouldn't get sick of if it were just her and I for the rest of our lives. I love my wife and seeing how great a mom she's become to our 2 boys makes me love her more but I'd get bored as shite if it were just us 2.

Wow.

I think rocket goes a little overboard on this stuff, but I will say that it's easy for people to preach that you have to have kids, but they never think about physical or developmental problems. I know you love your child unconditionally, but if I had to deal with a severely autistic or special needs kid (or a kid who got into drugs), it would probably break me.

theres a reason why the most intelligent, most educated, and most successful people are the ones who are procreating the least. this is true in all first-world countries and has been for quite some time.

it's scary that the dumbest people I knew in high school are easily the ones with the most kids today.

I think this has a lot more to do with irresponsibility and dysfunction of the lower class than the desires of the upper class.

It's easy to have a bunch of kids when you constantly frick around.

Almost every decision in your life you make has pro's and con's.

Getting married and having children are the two most polarizing decisions of your life. They have some of the biggest cons and hopefully the most significant pros of your life.

This is seriously the exact words I was about to type out. Weird.

The decision to have children (or not) should be the biggest decision of someone's life.

I think someone who doesn't want kids treating parents like they're "lesser" or stupid is horrible... and it just causes parents to lash out at those who don't want children. If someone is happy with the path they chose, that is freaking amazing IMO.

Like you said, every decision in life has pros and cons. As of right now in my life, I don't want children. I am young, so this may very well change. But for the sake of the conversation, I don't want children. Speaking to other women who are older (50s) and never wanted children, I am fully aware that even if I stick to this decision and am happy with it, I will be giving up the joy of motherhood. Sometimes I see children with their parents and it is so sweet that it makes me tear up. (I'm insane and love happy crying)

Just like a parent gives up things, choosing not to have children is also giving up things. It is all about which means more to you. And neither is the wrong way IMO.

Don't ask what a child can provide for you, ask what you can provide for a child.

My two boys are exhausting, require a lot of time, patience, and money.

They require firm discipline but also a gentle disposition

They can annoy the crap out of me and make me want to wear noise canceling headphones

Their diapers are so awful that our house will likely have to be registered by the EPA as a superfund site after we move

But they are the light of my world and everything I listed above is totally worth it to have them in my life.

The joy of watching them learn new things and laugh and play with each other is greater than any joy I've experienced by myself in my 30 years.

If you've never been a parent you'll never understand, but the moment you become a parent you'll immediately get it

Exactly this. I've been to many places, done many things in my life. But being a good father to my kids and a good husband to their mom is hands down the greatest thing I've ever experienced. No other experience in this world can come close.

If you're saying that parents should try complaining less, I agree with you. If you're saying that people should stop having kids, well, that's just dumb.

It's typically the other way around in my experience. I think it's great that people want to have children and love their children. Their kids are the most important things in their lives, and I get it. They aren't the most important things in my life.

I made the decision not to have kids, and am happier for it. That doesn't take away from anyone else's decisions, but when I tell people my wife and I don't want kids, they act like something is wrong with us. Or they say we'll change our minds, or we don't know what we're missing. I've even been told my life won't be complete until I have children. Do you know how fricking ridiculous and insulting that is? I'm sorry your life was meaningless before you had kids, but I've had a pretty sweet time so far and I plan to enjoy my life even more now that I have tons of money.

I've also been told that I'm selfish for not having kids. How does that make any sense? I'm selfish because I don't care about a kid that doesn't even exist? Or am I selfish because I'm not contributing to the overpopulation of the planet? I think it's great that people have lots of kids. It means I don't have to worry about adding my own to the world.

First off, I think I'd be bored as shite if I didn't have kids. Maybe I could have enjoyed my late 20's a bit more, but that stuff would have gotten old, IMO.

Things I thought I enjoyed are now just amplified watching my kids learn. I used to love to fish, but I LOVE watching/teaching my kids to fish. Same with youth sports.

And, I just don't get the idea that kids are super-expensive. I've got my fourth kid on the way and the costs are not a deterrent. You don't have to buy your kids a ton of shite. Just feed them and love them.

To each his own, but don't think that you've figured out life at 25.

why do parents continually cope with this bulshit line when they are obviously miserable?

its like parenting is some type of Stockholm syndrome where youre being held *hostage* by your children yet still express positive emotions towards them?

idk, seems like a sad existence to me.

The obvious answer to this is that all living organisms basically live to reproduce. However, you can make your mark on future generations in a different way. I still feel like improving is the goal of life so improving yourself, your community, and your world is important. How you decide to do that is your decision.

It doesn't have to be the way you describe. Children can be taken care of and loved without them being the primary focus/end all be all of a parents life.

A good way to look at it is that a child's needs come first in the house, but a child's wants come in dead last after mom and dads needs and wants.

The reason many parents make themselves miserable, IMO, is because they fail to distinguish between their children's needs vs. wants.

Becoming a father was the best thing I will ever do. Choosing not to have kids is a choice I can respect but don't bag on those who do make that choice.
