Children- Telling them what meat is....

At what age and how do you explain that meat is dead animal flesh?
My three year old just asked me who made his chicken nuggets.
I told him Tyson made them. He asked who Tyson was.
I said Tyson is a company in Georgia that has a big chicken farm. I paused. I went for it. I said Tyson makes chicken nuggets out of the chickens.
He didn’t seem bothered by it. I don’t think he fully comprehends what that means.

I've never told my kids that meat is dead animal flesh. They turned out fine

My kids know not to get attached to animals

I haven't had to have this talk with a kid but if I did, I would probably take the circle of life approach rather than the dead animal flesh tact.

My 2 year old understands where meat comes from

My 8 yo daughter has always loved bacon and pan sausage. She’s fully aware of the source.

I told my kids they plucked the heads and legs off baby chicks to make nuggets

Huh? Just tell them the truth. I don't ever remember my parents telling me what I was eating, was something else. I didn't realize parents hid that from their kids.

Start with shrimp, crawfish, lobster, etc. Anything where its obvious that you're eating a critter. Then let them watch you filet a fish, or roast a whole chicken. They will ask questions.

I wonder if 1000 years ago parents felt they had to tiptoe around where food comes from? What about 1000 years before that?
Humans have gotten so weird in the last century or so.

This reminds me when a buddy of mine moved to North Carolina right before his son started kindergarten.. Anyway, so when he was in kindergarten, one day the teacher gave the class a sheet with pictures of different items and they had to color the items that they were able to eat. There was a picture of a frog and when she looked at his, he colored the legs on the frog. She was confused and asked him about it.. And he told her something like "you can eat frog legs, I went frogging with my grandpa and the frogs we caught we went back home and ate their legs".

Wait till he finds out what Chinese food is.

Hmmmmn, I grew up on a farm, and as I got older, learned to hunt. Only animal that was safe was "Cow Belle", we got milk from her.
I didn't have to be told about "the birds & the bees" later in life either. I guess that's the biggest advantage for being a country boy, vs. city boy...

He could have had real fun with teacher if he'd said:

My kids think everything is chicken.
We made tacos the other day and they helped. They're under 4. When they saw the ground beef, they asked if it was chicken. I explained it was from a cow. When they were stirring the ground beef, they asked if cooking it turned it into chicken.

My son once asked me what’s beef. I told him it comes from cows, cows are delicious.
