My wife's grandmother passed when they were young. We've been open with them that she's deceased and tried to explain as best we can. They routinely blurt out that "Mommy's grandma is dead" whenever someone is talking about grandparents. You've got to chuckle at their innocence and bluntness.

My younger daughter caused a kerfluffle in preschool, when they saw baby piglets and she called them bacon seeds.
Apparently, you can trigger 5 year olds who don't understand where food comes from, with a joke.
